VW ID.4 entry-level versions now up for pre-sale
After the pre-sale of the special edition VW ID.4 1ST, VW is now starting the pre-sale of other models of the ID.4 – this includes versions with a smaller battery. Deliveries to customers in Europe and China are scheduled to begin in March, and in the USA from the middle of the year.
Pre-sales will remain open until mid-February as Volkswagen is introducing the new entry-level battery with further models of the ID.4. Until now, the electric car was only being offered with a 77 kWh battery and a 150 kW engine, as with the ID.4 Pro. With the ID.4 Pure, the cheaper model with the 52 kWh battery (348 kilometres according to WLTP instead of 522 kilometres) can be ordered for the first time.
The three newly added trims ‘Pure’, ‘City’ and ‘Style’ all have got the 52 kWh battery and are powered by a 125 kW engine. These versions have an acceleration of 0-100 km/h in 9.0 seconds, which is the same as their more powerful counterpart versions. The differences come in the charging power: all three versions only have a 7.2 kW AC charger, while the ‘Pro’ models with the 77 kWh battery have a three-phase 11 kW charger and the 11 kW charger is not even available at extra cost on the 52 kWh models. The basic Pure model can only charge at 50 kW at a DC charging point (100 kW costs 650 euros extra), City and Style at least at 100 kW, while the Pro models manage 125 kW.
In Germany, with the Pure equipment line, the model costs 38,450 euros before and 28,880 euros after subsidies. For many users, the leap to the City model (from 41,670 euros) might be worthwhile, among other things because of the built-in ‘Discover Pro’ navigation system, the heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, and distance control is also installed here. The Style model is priced at 46,055 euros in the car’s home country of Germany, which is more expensive than the lowest-priced ID.4 Pro with a large battery. The Style has, among other things, the LED matrix headlights, a reversing camera, the keyless locking system and the 3-zone air conditioning.
The free base colour on the ID.4 is called Moonstone Grey, with an optional black painted roof. All metallic paint finishes cost 610 euros extra. The base model still stands on 18-inch steel rims, alloy rims between 19 and 21 inches are available as an option. The trailer hitch (750kg unbraked/ 1,000kg braked) costs 880 euros. The heat pump is not standard on any of the 52 kWh models and costs 1,275 euros extra.
The electric car was presented at the end of September 2020 and has been available to order since then but only in the pre-configured 1ST Edition at prices starting at 49,950 euros. The configurator for the other ID.4 trim levels was opened at the beginning of January. As with the ID.3, the Pro (from 44,450 euros), Life, Business, Family, Tech and Max trims are available. As mentioned, this is only the version with a 77 kWh battery.
With the revealing of these other ID.4 versions, VW reiterates its goal of building as many as 1.5 million electric cars per year by 2025. “The ID.4 will make an important contribution to this. “With this model, Volkswagen is expanding its range to include an electric vehicle in the world’s largest growth segment, the compact SUV class,” says brand boss Ralf Brandstätter. “The market launch of our global car is, therefore, an important strategic milestone for the brand.”
Klaus Zellmer, the VW brand board member for sales, indicated that they planned to deliver more than 100,000 ID.4s this year. Zellmer said that they already have 17,000 orders for the vehicle to date. Since VW also says that of the deliveries planned for 2021, about two-thirds will go to Europe and one-third to China and the USA, the rough volumes can still be deduced.
The ID.4 will be built in Zwickau (for Europe and initially for the USA) and China at the Anting and Foshan plants. In China, two variants are offered, the ID.4 X built in Anting by SAIC-VW and the ID.4 Crozz built in Foshan by FAW-VW. Next year, production is scheduled to start in Emden and at the US plant in Chattanooga.
