Volkswagen halts production due to chip shortage

At Volkswagen Saxony, the assembly lines are at a standstill this week. Due to a lack of semiconductors, about 5,000 vehicles will not be built in Zwickau and Dresden. This includes vehicles from the VW brand, but also Audi and Cupra.

A spokesperson for VW Saxony confirmed the one-week production stop to Automobilwoche. In Saxony, however, only four production days will be cancelled because the state has a public holiday on Wednesday (Day of Prayer and Repentance). Therefore, the choice fell on the already shortened week.

The MEB plant in Zwickau and the electrical production in the Transparent Factory in Dresden have so far been little affected by the semiconductor crisis. The situation is different at VW’s main plant in Wolfsburg, where the four production lines for the Golf and Tiguan have already been at a standstill several times.

In Zwickau, 1,200 vehicles are usually built per day. In addition to the Volkswagen models ID.3, ID.4 and ID.5 (the latter currently still in pre-production), these include the Audi Q4 e-tron (and Sportback) and the Cupra Born. In addition, there are 35 ID.3s per day from Dresden.

Extrapolated, the four cancelled production days mean that around 5,000 vehicles will not be built. There are no known effects on the already long delivery times.

At VW Saxony, however, not only the two electric car plants are affected by the production stop: The Chemnitz engine plant is also not assembling any combustion engines this week. According to the report, however, bodywork production for Bentley and Lamborghini will continue in Zwickau.
