In addition to production, the site will also focus on the development of battery cells, battery modules and battery systems. There are no details yet on when construction will start or when it will be completed.

The Zhuhai city government will provide a 500,000-square-metre site on which a Sunwoda subsidiary founded specifically for the project will then construct the buildings and facilities.

Sunwoda also announced that it had received an order from SAIC, specifically for the ZS12MCE HEV hybrid model. Sunwoda had previously entered into battery cooperation agreements with Nissan and Geely for hybrid vehicles. Vehicles with Sunwoda batteries are also on the road in Europe: the Dacia Spring, a sister model of the Chinese Renault K-ZE City, uses Sunwoda cells.

Among Chinese battery cell manufacturers, Sunwoda is just among the top ten with a market share of 1.3 per cent in 2021. With 1.6 per cent, Farasis Energy is in ninth place, Eve Energy and Tafel New Energy share 8th place with 1.9 per cent.

Update 19 March 2022

The Chinese battery manufacturer Sunwoda Electric Vehicle Battery is planning another battery factory in China. Shortly after announcing the above-mentioned production facility with an annual capacity of 30 GWh in Zhuhai in Guangdong province, Sunwoda is now planning to invest 8 billion yuan (1.14 billion euros) in a 20 GWh battery plant for vehicles and stationary energy storage in Shifang in Sichuan province. Construction is expected to start this year and be completed in about twelve months.

According to the Sunwoda announcement, talks with the city government are still ongoing and a final agreement has probably not yet been signed. However, there are indications that the city will give its consent: According to the announcement, the Shifang Municipality will provide about 250,000 square metres of industrial facilities and ancillary facilities for a 15-year lease.
