Copenhagen to switch to all-electric harbour buses
The city of Copenhagen has set aside 10 million kroner to electrify their entire fleet of harbour ferries. The iconic water taxis in EV form will be launched in Copenhagen Harbour by 2020, and ticket prices will stay the same, says the city.

ABB & Ballard develop fuel cell system for large ships
Clean tech specialists ABB and Ballard have come together to develop a large scale fuel cell solution for the shipping industry. Their system for hydrogen-powered ships aims to generate 3MW or 4,000 hp and fit within a single module no bigger than a conventional boat motor.

Scotland to build first sea-going hydrogen ferry
Scotland’s Ferguson Shipbuilders have managed to secure funding through the EU project HySeas III. With partners such as the Ballard or DLR and from different European countries they will build the world’s first sea going ferry running on fuel cells powered by hydrogen from renewables.

Swedish-Danish ferry route gets electrified gradually
Swedish Stena Line that operates a ferry service between Gothenburg and Danish Frederikshavn has made a deal with with Callenberg Technology Group. In three stages signified by different sized batteries, they want to electrify the vessel Stena Jutlandica.

Kreisel builds 100 kWh boat battery for Portier
Kreisel Electric has developed a high performance battery, which allows for a high speed of up to 50 knots (93 km/h) on the purportedly fastest serially produced electric boat in the world. The motor for the SAY29E Runabout Carbon has a peak performance of 368 kW.

Norway: Electric catamaran Future of Fjords launch
The all-electric catamaran called the Future of Fjords has been launched just as planned. Its carbon fibre hull has space for 400 passengers and the electric ferry will sail between Norway’s UNESCO heritage sites and opportunity charge at sea.

All-electric pilot boat by Canada’s Robert Allan
Naval engineering firm Robert Allan has designed an all-electric pilot boat to ferry pilots to their bigger barges waiting further at sea. The RAlly 1600-E is to run 5 nautical miles, just short of 10 km, leaving enough capacity in the battery to get back safe.

Germany’s Torqeedo has received a large order from China, where the mega manufacturing hub Suzhou struggles to clean up its act. 177 workboats powered by Torqeedo’s all-electric drive are to be deployed on the region’s many waterways to scoop up debris.

Electric container vessels connect Rotterdam and Tilburg

In the Chinese Guangzhou province, a massive cargo ship with an energy storage capacity of 2.4 MWh has been put into operation. The vessel couples two 160 kW electric propellers and a mix of supercapacitors and Li-ion batteries for up to 80 km on one charge.
