La empresa de transporte colectivo Grab invierte en Momenta, especialista en robotaxi

The Singapore-based mobility platform Grab is investing in another Chinese autonomous driving specialist - Momenta. The size of the investment is currently unknown, but it is already clear that both partners aim to bring autonomous driving technologies to the urban mobility markets of Southeast Asia.

As early as August, Grab partnered with China’s Momenta competitor WeRide, which included an investment from Grab in WeRide and a strategic collaboration to integrate Level 4 autonomous vehicles—known as robotaxis—into Grab’s network. These vehicles will be bookable via Grab’s ride-hailing app, just as users would book a conventional driver-operated car.

The new partnership between Grab and Momenta follows a similar structure: a strategic investment from Grab in Momenta forms the cornerstone of the collaboration, while both partners also aim to introduce robotaxis to Grab’s platform. However, this partnership extends beyond Level 4 self-driving cars; it also includes advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) at Level 2, which are already being implemented by BMW y Mercedes-Benz for the Chinese market.

Both partners now plan to explore this dual approach—combining Level 2 ADAS-equipped vehicles and Level 4 robotaxis—for the Southeast Asian market, with safety as the central focus of their collaboration. This marks a significant step in the internationalisation of Momenta’s parallel “L2 + L4” strategy.

The partnership between Grab and Momenta aims to pioneer a factory-installed, series-production approach to deploying autonomous driving systems in Southeast Asia. Additionally, Momenta’s own robotaxis, which the company plans to deploy as fleets in multiple cities, will be integrated into Grab’s platform.

Grab manager Dominic Ong states: “We are excited to shape the future of mobility in Southeast Asia and Momenta’s impressive technological capabilities expands the ways we will explore that. Their simultaneous focus on mass-market ADAS and cutting-edge Robotaxis creates a powerful feedback loop. This partnership will be essential for us to rigorously test different autonomous use cases, understand the commercial path to autonomous operations, and ultimately define the best way to safely weave this next-generation technology into the daily journeys of our users.”

Momenta CEO Xudong Cao adds: “Grab is the most influential mobility platform in the Southeast Asian market, and we are delighted to join hands with Grab to bring Momenta’s technology and experience to this vibrant region. Our goal is to make safe and comfortable autonomous driving experiences a part of everyday life for users around the world—just like mobile networks are today.”

As early as May, Momenta also entered into a asociación con Uber to introduce autonomous vehicles on Uber’s platform in international markets outside the USA and China. Both parties plan to begin real-world testing of robotaxis in Munich as early as 2026, before rolling out the service across multiple European cities.
