Glasgow seeks operator for 3000 new EV charge points
The contract on offer is backed by more than £3.6 million from the Scottish government, and covers Glasgow City, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire councils.
Once a tender is in place, the new charge point operator will be tasked with installing 3000 new charge points across a combination of street locations and council-owned car parks across this region. Additionally, the region’s existing network of 600+ council-owned charge points will also be handed over to the new CPO, which will be expected to hold the contract for 20 years.
An initial Invitation to Participate was published last month (December 2025), and the contract is expected to be awarded in late 2026. The contract abstract itself says: “The CPO will be required to provide a full Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) turnkey service via 20-year concession contract which will include both the migration of around 627 existing charge points and minimum of 3034 new charge points at council owned assets and on-street locations.” The contract also confirms that this will entail supply, installation, maintenance and back office services associated with the charging points.
Fiona Hyslop, Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Transport, said: “The demand for electric vehicles is going to dramatically increase over the coming years. We need to be ready to support that transition and the delivery of over 3000 new charge points across the City Region will do just that.” She added: “The City Region partners are delivering one of the most significant public EV charging projects in the UK, one which will make charging a car so much easier and accessible for the many thousands of residents who don’t have driveways and for whom owning an electric vehicle has perhaps not been an option.”
