Dongfeng Nissan presenta un SUV eléctrico con carga rápida 5C

The Dongfeng Nissan joint venture has unveiled the new NX8. The mid-sized SUV will launch in China as both a BEV and an EREV, serving as a sister model to the N7 sedan.

The NX8 measures 4.87 metres in length, 1.92 metres in width and 1.68 metres in height. Dongfeng Nissan states that the five-seater has a wheelbase of 2.92 metres. The wheelbase is not the only similarity to the electric sedan N7, which was introduced last year: the new NX8 also adopts the design language, which differs significantly from Nissan’s Japanese and international models. As a result, Dongfeng Nissan’s models remain close to the basic design of the Dongfeng 007 saloon, with aesthetics tailored to the preferences of Chinese customers.

However, the new SUV stands out technically from the N7 and 007: the battery-electric version uses an 800 V platform combined with next-generation LFP cells from CATL, featuring 5C fast-charging capability. The BEV version is powered by a single motor, available in variants with either 215 or 250 kW output. By comparison, the saloons are offered with only 160 or 200 kW outputs.

The company has not yet disclosed further details about the battery, such as its energy capacity. While China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology requires the cell chemistry and battery supplier to be listed for inclusion in the official vehicle catalogue, the battery size does not need to be specified. So far, it is only known that the range options are 580 kilometres, 565 kilometres and 650 kilometres (all according to CLTC). This likely means a smaller battery is available with both the lower- and higher-powered drivetrains, while a larger battery is offered exclusively with the more powerful 250 kW motor, a common configuration for Chinese models.

However, the additional information that the battery is a 5C model from CATL reveals a key fact about its fast-charging capability. A 5C charging rate means the battery can be charged at five times its energy capacity (in kWh) in kilowatts. In other words, at 5C, the battery can be fully charged in one-fifth of an hour—just 12 minutes.

The Dongfeng Nissan NX8 will be presented in greater detail in the first half of the year, including full specifications for charging power and battery size, as well as pricing. As the portal CarNewsChina notes, it is also worth mentioning that “the NX8 is the first NEV SUV from a foreign brand” to feature both an 800 V high-voltage platform and 5C ultra-fast charging technology. While Nissan is considered a foreign brand in China, the platform and technology clearly originate from Dongfeng and CATL.
