Go North East lanza 29 autobuses eléctricos en rutas clave del noreste

UK operator Go North East has unveiled 29 new electric double-decker buses for three of the region’s busiest routes. The rollout is supported by a £17 million joint investment from Go North East, the North East Combined Authority and the Department for Transport.

All 29 buses are UK-built electric double-deckers supplied by Wrightbus and will be charged at Go North East’s Riverside depot using infrastructure delivered in partnership with Northern Powergrid. The government has contributed more than £7 million to the scheme.

The electric buses will enter passenger service over the coming weeks, operating between Newcastle and Durham on the Angel 21, between Gateshead and the Metrocentre on the X66, and linking Newcastle, Heworth and the Follingsby employment area on service 58.

“These 29 new electric buses will nearly double the number already on our roads, and they’re part of a much bigger rollout that will see more electric buses introduced on more routes across the North East,” said North East Mayor Kim McGuinness. “I’ve been clear that it’s my ambition to see diesel buses phased out within a decade, and today we’ve made a big step towards that.”

The new fleet is intended to deliver quieter operation, zero tailpipe emissions and an improved passenger experience. Accessibility features include audio-visual next-stop announcements, hearing loops and external sounders to alert pedestrians, supporting safer and more inclusive travel.

Nigel Featham, Managing Director of Go North East, said the introduction of electric buses would have a tangible impact on daily journeys. “We’re proud to be bringing quieter, zero-emission journeys to some of our busiest routes, improving air quality and giving passengers a more modern, comfortable experience,” he said.

Roads and Buses Minister Simon Lightwood described the project as part of a broader policy push, stating: “Backed by over £7 million in funding from the Government, these buses mean smoother, greener journeys for thousands of passengers across the North East.”
