The German development agency GIZ will coordinate the project and also include small local miners who work under particularly dangerous conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Before they became &#8220;strategic&#8221;, the minerals were all subject to a royalty rate of 3.5 percent, an increase over the 2 percent rate in Congo\u2019s previous mining code.<\/p>\n<p>Cobalt plays a key role in the production of batteries for electrified vehicles. The resource is also a rare element, with only about 0,004% of the earth\u2019s crust holding the mineral.
