La producci\u00f3n aumentar\u00e1 a 16 GWh a finales de 2023 y Volkswagen invertir\u00e1 alrededor de 1.000 millones de euros.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen pretende producir de forma independiente sus propias c\u00e9lulas de bater\u00eda en una empresa conjunta con Northvolt, en lugar de tener que depender de los sistemas de bater\u00edas de los proveedores. En la planta de Salzgitter (Alemania), donde los motores TDI y TSI ya est\u00e1n saliendo de la cadena de montaje, el Centro de Excelencia (CoE) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/es\/2019\/05\/13\/el-consejo-de-volkswagen-desbloquea-1-000-millones-de-euros-para-una-fabrica-de-celulas-de-baterias\/\">ya est\u00e1 establecido<\/a> con una plantilla inicial de 300 empleados.<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen ha inaugurado hoy una planta piloto de producci\u00f3n como parte de dicho CoE con el objetivo de realizar pruebas, desarrollar y producir peque\u00f1as series de c\u00e9lulas de bater\u00edas. Para Frank Blome, responsable del CoE de c\u00e9lulas de bater\u00edas, la planta piloto es \"un paso importante en nuestro camino hacia la construcci\u00f3n de la gigafactor\u00eda\". Hay que asegurar el rendimiento, los costes y la calidad para \"dominar toda la cadena de valor de las bater\u00edas de iones de litio, desde las materias primas hasta el reciclaje, pasando por la producci\u00f3n\". La c\u00e9lula en serie de la empresa conjunta con Northvolt tendr\u00e1 una densidad energ\u00e9tica gravim\u00e9trica de unos 300 vatios-hora por kilogramo. This will be made possible by the consistent control of battery cells throughout the entire value chain: from installation in the battery system, for example of the ID series (&#8220;1st Life&#8221;), through Second Life (stationary storage, etc.) to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2019\/02\/21\/vw-releases-battery-recycling-details\/\">recycling<\/a>. Recycling will not be based on so-called thermal recycling, i.e. actual incineration, but on a process based on decomposition under inert gas.<\/p>\n<p>This in turn strongly reminds of what <em>electrive<\/em> experienced at the German <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2019\/01\/20\/doing-away-with-hazardous-waste-battery-recycling-works\/\">battery recycling firm Duesenfeld<\/a> in January. From industry circles, <em>electrive<\/em> has also caught wind of a potential patent dispute. At the Volkswagen-Northvolt battery production site, the recycling recovery rate is supposed to be over 90 per cent \u2013 whereby only 50 per cent recycling by weight is currently required by law. Either way, Volkswagen wants to serve and control the entire battery field. &#8220;A completely new industry must emerge from the immense quantity we need,&#8221; says Dr Stefan Sommer, Member of the Board of Management for Components and Procurement at Volkswagen AG, and it sounds like a promise.<\/p>\n<p>A comparison with Tesla, for example, shows that this announcement can only be the first step. Tesla&#8217;s Gigafactory 1 in Nevada (USA) is expected to reach an actual output of 36 GWh by 2020 at the latest. Should Volkswagen come even close to the range of the planned 25 per cent market share of battery electric cars in 2025, the cars they make themselves will not suffice. This would correspond to about 150 GWh per year, i.e. about ten times as much as the factory in Salzgitter is currently intended for. This means that further double-digit billion investments will be necessary. As is so often the case in large-scale industry, this will become a matter of ramping up the number of units: Start small, optimise the processes and then really go for mass production.<\/p>\n<p>Frederik Hedlund, designated CEO of the joint venture with Northvolt, who was also present at the opening said: &#8220;We want to build the world&#8217;s most sustainable and environmentally friendly battery&#8221;. The &#8220;Green Battery&#8221; should also have a competitive advantage: The electricity used for production will come from renewable energy, and the supply chain for the raw materials should adhere to ethical standards.
