La reci\u00e9n fundada empresa noruega Morrow Batteries planea construir una f\u00e1brica de c\u00e9lulas de bater\u00edas para coches el\u00e9ctricos. En la fase final de ampliaci\u00f3n, la f\u00e1brica tendr\u00e1 una capacidad de 32 GWh. La primera de las cuatro fases de ampliaci\u00f3n previstas, de 8 GWh cada una, deber\u00eda estar terminada en 2024.<\/p>\n
A la producci\u00f3n europea de c\u00e9lulas de bater\u00edas, actualmente en proceso de gestaci\u00f3n, se unir\u00e1 un nuevo actor: Morrow Batteries acaba de anunciar su intenci\u00f3n de construir una f\u00e1brica de c\u00e9lulas y un centro de investigaci\u00f3n en Agder, al sur de Noruega. La ubicaci\u00f3n se ha elegido deliberadamente para que est\u00e9 lo m\u00e1s cerca posible de las naciones automovil\u00edsticas europeas. El objetivo principal ser\u00e1 la producci\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas de bater\u00edas para los coches el\u00e9ctricos fabricados en el continente. Seg\u00fan los promotores, las obras en el emplazamiento comenzar\u00e1n en 2021. El proyecto cuenta con el apoyo de fondos del programa de investigaci\u00f3n de la UE Horizonte 2020, entre otros.<\/p>\n
Inicialmente, Morrow Batteries pretende fabricar c\u00e9lulas basadas en las tecnolog\u00edas existentes, tras lo cual se utilizar\u00e1 la \"tecnolog\u00eda de c\u00e9lulas de bater\u00eda de nueva generaci\u00f3n\" en las siguientes fases de expansi\u00f3n de la planta. Se trata del desarrollo y la industrializaci\u00f3n de nuevas c\u00e9lulas de bater\u00eda de litio-azufre.<\/p>\n
Una alianza de varios actores noruegos respalda la nueva empresa de bater\u00edas. Los propietarios de la nueva empresa son, entre otros, el grupo energ\u00e9tico noruego Agder Energi y el importante empresario Bj\u00f8rn Rune Gjelstens, propietario de la empresa de gesti\u00f3n de residuos Noah AS. La organizaci\u00f3n ecologista Bellona tambi\u00e9n figura como iniciadora y fundadora. Morrow Batteries wants to benefit from the upcoming boom in the electric car industry and at the same time prove that battery cell production can be a sustainable industry. “We need to build up alternative industries to oil and gas, and be able to take a green shift,” says Terje Andersen, CEO of Morrow Batteries, in a media report. In Agder, the initiators of the project have access to energy from hydroelectric power, among other sources. For the lithium-sulfur battery cells, Morrow Batteries also intends to use waste materials from the Norwegian oil industry in the future. The value chain is to be explicitly different from those in Asia.<\/p>\n
If the company succeeds in conquering 2.5 per cent of the European market for battery cells, around 10,000 new jobs could be created in Norway, according to the SINTEF research institute. There should be enough skilled workers, as the region has long been the location of several electrochemical companies. According to Agder Energi, it also has access to a network of suppliers of critical raw materials. Morrow Batteries, for example, provides “a solid basis for a quick start to mass production”, it says.<\/p>\n
Norwegian environmental activist Frederic Hauge, head of the Bellona Foundation, which he co-founded in 1986, is the leading proponent of the company’s claim to build one of the most environmentally friendly battery cell factories in the world. “I am convinced that if we are to stop the escalating climate crisis, the world must as fast as possible secure a stable supply of energy from renewables like sun and wind,” said Hauge. “A critical factor for this stability is sustainable options for energy storage, and that is why we initiated this project.”<\/p>\n
Norway is considered a model country for electromobility. Registration figures regularly show<\/a> an electric car share above the 50 per cent mark. The Norwegian initiative to set up a battery cell factory accompanies the projects already announced by Volkswagen and Northvolt in Salzgitter<\/a> and by Northvolt in Skellefte\u00e5<\/a> alone. While Skellefte\u00e5 is to start production in 2021 with a capacity of 32 GWh and be expanded to 40 GWh by 2024, the Salzgitter plant is expected to have a production capacity of 16 GWh by the end of 2023 and 24 GWh later.
