The best-known example is certainly the cooperation with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2020\/08\/20\/panasonic-boosts-tesla-battery-production-with-100m\/\">Tesla, which includes Gigafactory 1<\/a> in Nevada. Here, the Japanese company recently introduced a new generation of cells with improved properties, and in the summer, they announced further increases in energy density and the elimination of cobalt. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2020\/10\/31\/panasonic-to-develop-new-4680-battery-cell-for-tesla\/\">At the end of October<\/a>, Panasonic also announced their intention to develop their battery cell based on the new 4680 format presented by Tesla at Battery Day.<\/p>\n<p>If the strategic cooperation between Panasonic and the Norwegian partners should indeed result in the construction of a battery cell factory, the Japanese company would join an increasingly long list of Asian investors in the emerging European battery industry. The South Korean group LG Chem is expanding its existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2020\/04\/24\/lg-chem-secures-ehalf-a-billion-for-polish-factory-expansion\/\">capacities in Poland<\/a>, CATL is building its European <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2019\/10\/19\/catl-starts-building-battery-plant-in-germany\/\">plant near Erfurt<\/a>, the smaller Chinese cell manufacturer and Daimler partner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2019\/05\/09\/farasis-energy-plans-battery-plant-in-germany\/\">Farasis is building in Bitterfeld-Wolfen<\/a> in Germany. This week, the Chinese cell manufacturer SVOLT announced that it would build its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2020\/11\/17\/svolt-to-build-24-gwh-battery-factory-in-german-saarland\/\">European battery cell factory in Saarland<\/a>, which will produce up to 24 GWh.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Norsk Hydro reports progress on its announced joint venture with the Swedish battery cell manufacturer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2020\/06\/02\/northvolt-and-norsk-hydro-to-recycle-batteries\/\">Northvolt for battery recycling<\/a>. The planned pilot plant of the Hydro Volt joint venture for the recycling of used electric car batteries will receive 43.5 million kroner from the Norwegian state enterprise Enova.
