General Motors ha confirmado ahora oficialmente que su segunda planta de fabricaci\u00f3n de bater\u00edas en EE.UU., como parte de su empresa conjunta con LG Energy Solutions, se est\u00e1 construyendo ya en Spring Hill, donde GM tiene ya una planta de montaje de bater\u00edas en la localidad de Tennessee.<\/p>\n

It is likely that the long and bitter court battle between the two S.Korean battery-making giants LG Chem and SK Innovation has had an influence on the timing of these announcements.<\/p>\n Early in March just passed<\/a>, the Wall Street Journal<\/em> reported that LG Energy Solutions and General Motors were close to a decision to build a plant in Tennessee as part of their joint venture. But General Motors seemed to be still undecided, releasing a public statement saying that it hoped to \u201cmake a decision on the potential project\u201d by June. Later the same month LG went right ahead and announced that the plant<\/a> is to offer a similar production capacity as the first plant in Ohio (35 GWh per year) and produce \u201cnext-generation cells,\u201d\u00a0 but there was still no confirmation from General Motors (and LG Chem’s court battle appeared to be continuing with SK Innovation<\/a>). Then, just days later, another major partner of LG Energy Solutions, Volkswagen, who was intending to source batteries from LG Chem, suddenly announced they would do without<\/a> either S.Korean battery maker.<\/p>\n The official announcement now from General Motors most likely comes on the back of the news last week that LG Energy Solutions parent company LG Chem had settled the bitter fight with SK Innovation<\/a> out of court whereby the two S.Korean battery-making giants agreed not to sue the other party for at least the next ten years.<\/p>\n In their latest press release for the new cell plant, General Motors underlined that “Ultium battery technology is at the heart of GM\u2019s EV strategy.” This was quite clear almost exactly a year ago when the company revealed<\/a> the Ultium batteries along with its electric vehicle platform. With so much riding on the relationship with LG Energy Solutions, it must be a massive relief that the parent company LG Chem’s bitter battery battle is over.<\/p>\n
