La empresa especifica una energ\u00eda de 405 Wh\/kg y, bas\u00e1ndose en ella, un m\u00f3dulo de bater\u00eda para la aviaci\u00f3n con 280 Wh\/kg y 320 Wh\/L, respectivamente.<\/p>\n<p>Northvolt adquiri\u00f3 la empresa estadounidense en <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/es\/2021\/03\/10\/northvolt-entrara-en-ee-uu-mediante-la-adquisicion-de-cuberg\/\">Marzo de 2021<\/a>. Cuberg hab\u00eda ampliado sus instalaciones de producci\u00f3n en la zona de la bah\u00eda de San Francisco tras la adquisici\u00f3n y hab\u00eda demostrado que las pilas de litio met\u00e1lico pod\u00edan fabricarse utilizando los mismos procesos de producci\u00f3n que las actuales pilas de iones de litio.<\/p>\n<p>En aquel momento, su c\u00e9lula de 5,1 Ah con una densidad energ\u00e9tica de 380 Wh\/kg hab\u00eda alcanzado una vida \u00fatil de 672 ciclos. En otras palabras, la c\u00e9lula se carg\u00f3 y descarg\u00f3 672 veces antes de que el contenido energ\u00e9tico descendiera al 80% del valor original. They said the cells delivered more than 70 per cent increased range and capacity versus comparable lithium-ion cells designed for electric aviation applications.<\/p>\n<p>Cuberg is a Stanford University spin-off which started in 2015 to work on &#8220;next-gen battery technology&#8221; with a particularly high energy density and thermal stability based on a liquid electrolyte combined with a lithium metal anode. The lithium metal module platform has since achieved passive propagation resistance during a thermal runaway verification test campaign, a key step in the certification of aviation battery systems, so Cuberg.<\/p>\n<p>Cuberg and Northvolt are not the only ones targeting the emerging market around zero-emission aviation. A week ago, CATL showed novel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2023\/04\/19\/catl-launches-ultra-high-energy-condensed-battery\/\">Condensed Battery<\/a> technology in Shanghai, explicitly addressing electric aircraft applications. The battery claims an energy density of 500 Wh\/kg at the cell level, with series production to start this year.<\/p>\n<p>As for Northvolt, the company has the ambition for Cuberg to industrialise cells in 2025 that exceed 400 Wh\/kg in high-performance markets, spokes person Andrews informed us. A previous version of this article had compared CATL with Northvolt&#8217;s target for a 1,000 Wh\/kg battery, however, in automotive-focused cell technology.
