Anunciada en 2021, Fortum afirma que se trata de la mayor planta de reciclaje de Europa en t\u00e9rminos de capacidad y tambi\u00e9n de la primera instalaci\u00f3n a escala comercial de reciclaje hidrometal\u00fargico.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Fortum ya operaba una planta piloto en el emplazamiento de Harjavalta y ahora ha finalizado la ampliaci\u00f3n a una instalaci\u00f3n a escala industrial como <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/es\/2021\/06\/17\/fortum-invierte-en-una-nueva-planta-de-reciclaje-de-pilas-en-finlandia\/\">planificado<\/a>. La empresa espera ahora que la nueva planta \"alivie en gran medida la creciente demanda de materiales sostenibles para bater\u00edas por parte de los fabricantes europeos, contribuyendo a reducir la dependencia europea de las materias primas cr\u00edticas importadas para bater\u00edas\".<\/p>\n<p>En marzo de 2021, las operaciones hidrometal\u00fargicas de reciclaje de bater\u00edas de Fortum fueron preseleccionadas para el Fondo de Innovaci\u00f3n de la UE para tecnolog\u00edas con bajas emisiones de carbono por valor de mil millones de euros. Fortum tambi\u00e9n ha recibido subvenciones IPCEI (Proyecto Importante de Inter\u00e9s Com\u00fan Europeo) de Business Finland para establecer sus plantas y procesos de reciclaje.<\/p>\n<p>La hidrometalurgia es una t\u00e9cnica dentro de la metalurgia extractiva, la obtenci\u00f3n de metales a partir de sus menas, y consiste en utilizar soluciones acuosas para recuperar metales. En el caso de Fortum, la empresa combina tecnolog\u00edas mec\u00e1nicas e hidrometal\u00fargicas de baja emisi\u00f3n de carbono para reciclar las bater\u00edas de forma sostenible. Las bater\u00edas de iones de litio se desmontan primero y se procesan mec\u00e1nicamente en <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/es\/2021\/01\/27\/fortum-amplia-su-negocio-de-reciclaje-en-finlandia\/\">Instalaciones de Fortum en Ikaalinen<\/a>. The plant already returns nickel and cobalt sulphates, and Fortum said the products meet customer specifications. While not named here, Fortum is known to work with BASF and Nornickel.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the company expects the demand for recycled battery materials to increase &#8220;dramatically over the next five to ten years&#8221; due to new EU sustainable batteries regulation. &#8220;The manufacturers need to prepare for the legislative changes now, as the first minimum levels of recovery for materials such as cobalt, nickel and lithium will come into force in 2026,&#8221; said Holl\u00e4nder.<\/p>\n<p>He added that limiting the source of the recycled content only to end-of-life batteries and battery manufacturing scrap will &#8220;simply not be enough for the need of the manufacturing industries. This is why we must harness all waste streams containing critical metals.<\/p>\n<p>Here the company claims to now provide a closed loop for battery recycling along the value chain in Europe. Fortum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electrive.com\/2023\/03\/17\/fortum-starts-up-battery-recycling-plant-in-germany\/\">reportedly<\/a> launched pre-treatment services in Kirchardt, Germany, for electric vehicle batteries in March. This is now combined with the mechanical process in Ikaalinen and hydrometallurgical metal recovery in Harjavalta.
