With its new battery, the MG4 Urban is one of the most affordable electric cars in the United Kingdom, as highlighted by the automotive portal Auto Express<\/em>. The Chinese-made electric compact car undercuts the prices of key European and Korean competitors by around 20 per cent. “The Chinese price wars have reached our shores,” Auto Express <\/em>states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MG4 Urban represents the second generation of the MG4, which has been on sale in China since September 2025<\/a> and is now also entering the UK market. After just three years of production, the SAIC-owned brand MG Motor has not only subtly refined the MG4 but transitioned it to a completely new platform<\/a>. The previous MG4 EV featured rear-wheel drive, while the new model, sold in the UK with the ‘Urban’ suffix, is a front-wheel-drive vehicle. The MG4 Urban is also nearly eleven centimetres longer than its predecessor, with increases in width, height, and wheelbase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, both models will be available simultaneously in the UK market. The new MG4 Urban offers more affordable entry-level options. The MG4 Urban ‘Comfort Standard Range’ with a 43 kWh battery and a WLTP range of 323 kilometres is priced from \u00a323,495, currently equivalent to around \u20ac27,100. This variant is powered by a 110 kW motor and supports a maximum charging capacity of 150 kW\u2014a respectable figure given the battery size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MG4 Urban Comfort Long Range is available for an additional \u00a32,000, featuring a 54 kWh battery for a WLTP range of 415 kilometres. The \u00a325,495 price tag currently equates to around \u20ac29,400. The 54 kWh battery is also offered in a higher-spec trim as the Premium Long Range model for \u00a327,495, with the same WLTP range. Both versions are equipped with a 118 kW powertrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ‘old’ MG4 EV model remains available with the Extended-Range battery and the sporty XPower variant with all-wheel drive<\/a>. To distinguish the two MG4 models more clearly, the older MG4 will receive a new interior. The variants with smaller batteries will be discontinued and replaced by the new MG4 Urban. “Alongside the upgraded MG4 EV is an exciting new addition to the family. Stylishly equipped, spaciously sized and sharpened for the streets – the all-new MG4 EV Urban goes one step further in making cutting edge electric hatchbacks attainable without compromise,” announces MG Motor on its UK website.<\/p>\n\n\n

The two models differ not only in their platforms but also in their battery concepts. The MG4 Urban features a cell-to-body battery, which is directly integrated into the chassis. Its predecessor used a more conventional battery pack. Overall, the MG4 Urban is nearly 150 kilograms lighter. Additionally, the platform is prepared for solid-state batteries, which are already available in China\u2014but will not be offered in the UK at launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“One of the benefits of the [Chinese MG4] platform being front-wheel drive is that it\u2019s a little bit cheaper,” explained David Allison, MG\u2019s Head of Product and Planning, to Auto Express<\/em> in late 2025. “Competition is becoming more intense, more aggressive. Trying to find a way of keeping a competitive-priced product is more and more challenging as the ZEV targets ramp up.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It remains unclear whether and when the MG4 Urban will be offered in Germany. A dual-model lineup, as seen in the UK, is possible but unconfirmed. In Germany, the ‘old’ MG4 Electric with a 49 kWh battery is available from \u20ac34,990.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Update 18 February 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

MG Motor has now also opened order books for the MGS6 EV in Austria, making it the first continental European market after the UK to offer the electric SUV. Prices start at \u20ac34,990.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Positioned above the MGS5 EV in the brand\u2019s line-up, the fully electric C-segment SUV is available in three variants with two powertrain options. The 180 kW rear-wheel-drive version uses a 77 kWh battery and delivers up to 530 kilometres of WLTP range. It is offered in \u2018Comfort\u2019 trim from \u20ac34,990 and in \u2018Luxury\u2019 trim from \u20ac38,490.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 266 kW all-wheel-drive version is also available in \u2018Luxury\u2019 specification. It combines the same 77 kWh NMC battery with a WLTP range of up to 485 kilometres and starts at \u20ac41,490. According to MG Motor Austria, list prices can be reduced through trade-in, leasing and insurance bonuses.
All variants share identical charging performance. DC fast charging from 10 to 80 per cent takes around 38 minutes at a peak of 144 kW. The model offers five driving modes and five levels of regenerative braking, including one-pedal driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MGS6 EV is based on SAIC\u2019s MSP platform, first introduced with the MG4 EV. Measuring 4.71 metres in length, the SUV provides 674 litres of boot space, expanding to 1,910 litres with the rear seats folded, plus a 124-litre front trunk. Inside, the vehicle features a 10.25-inch driver display and a 12.8-inch central touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as app connectivity via MG iSMART.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
