Daimler and BAIC want to invest 11.9 billion yuan, or 1.5 billion euros, in China through their joint venture Beijing Benz Automotive to build a new local production facility. They will produce new energy vehicles among other models.

Starting with the mild-hybrid as new base motor, plug-ins and all-electric variants will complete the palette. Five pure EVs can be expected by 2021 with three running under Geely’s Swedish flagship and the other two bearing the Polestar label. The latter is about to be remodelled as electric brand under the guidance of Volvo’s former head of design, Thomas Ingenlath (we reported). With the new strategy under way, ICE will see a phase out that is likely to be completed by 2023 following Volvo’s five-year product lifecycle.

Daimler and BAIC expand their JV operation with 5bn yuan (735m USD) to flow into EV production in China by 2020 including the infrastructure. A three-digit million euro sum of that investment is destined to build a new battery factory by Beijing Benz Automotive Co. (BBAC) in the People’s Republic.

Hybrid autonomous system: Swedish Einride has unveiled its first full-scale prototype. The T-Pod is a remote-controlled electric truck and with a cabin for a driver missing, it looks futuristic, or a bit odd. It can transport 15 euro pallets and travel 124 miles on one charge. Charging stations are being worked on as well and Einride hopes to have a first full version of the T-Pod ready by autumn.

BMW batteries take to life on sea as Torqeedo is using i3 power packs for energy storage in its Deep Blue electric drive systems for motorboats. The batteries are new and not recycled though and come with the full capacity of 30.5 kWh.

On sale Hyundai PHEV: British drivers will get their hands on the Hyundai Ioniq plug-in hybrid this month. It is priced from 24,995 pounds, including the £2,500 Plug-In Car Grant.

Straddling bus a fraud: Police in China have arrested 32 people for illegal fundraising for a scrapped project to create a “straddling bus“. JV for LEV: ZF believes micro mobility is the future and has set up a joint venture with Magura, BrakeForceOne and Unicorn Energy to work on two, three, and four-wheeled electric solutions. Magura has been active in the e-bike segment for some time, being Bosch’s preferred service partner in the early days. Unicorn Energy is to take on battery technology and the JV plans to present first models by late summer this year. The Eurobike show might see the launch as Friedrichshafen is also home to Zukunft Ventures as the JV is aptly named. (Zukunft means future in German.) ZF marked logistics but also passenger transport as segments for its light electric vehicles and will deliver respective drive trains.

Daimler & BAIC to build PEV: Germany and China tighten relations as Daimler and BAIC agree to expand their cooperation to include hybrid and electric vehicles. The deal was sealed with the prime minister Li Keqiang and Chancellor Merkel in attendance in Berlin. In concrete terms, Mercedes-Benz will upgrade its factory in Beijing to produce new energy vehicles and agreed to acquire a stake in BAIC’s subsidiary Beijing Electric Vehicle (BJEV), that focuses on research and development.

Singulato is Zhiche: The Chinese EV firm coming up recently is not entirely new but the English name for Zhiche Auto. With its 600m dollar financing, it may build two concept electric cars. BAIC builds in Malaysia: The Chinese carmaker presented the EV200 made in Malaysia. The EV allegedly sits on the former Smart ForFour’s platform and is built in a joint venture with local Amber Dual. The front-wheel drive is powered by a 30.4 kWh Li-ion battery with the top speed set at 125 kph.

Zero Motorcycles’ new range: The electric motorcycle maker launched its 2017 line-up with a 200 mile range. Prices start at 8,495 dollars but almost double to 15,995 USD. A redesigned Z-Force drive delivers 19 percent higher torque and 11% more power and European dealers take deliveries.

Electric Porsche SUV? Spy shots of a Porsche test coupe led Car Magazine to suggest that what we are seeing is the sequel to an electric crossover similar to Audi’s upcoming electric SUV. If it is true, the electric Porsche would fight for market segments with the Model X or Jaguar.

Pictures of first plug-in Mini: MotoringFile released first images of the Mini Countryman E, the brand’s first PHEV. The drivetrain combines 100 kW combustion engine in the front and 65 kW electric motor in the back. The 7.7 kWh battery pack stores enough energy for an all-electric range of 38 km. The Countryman E could be presented in September and launch early 2017.

New Daimler brand? The manufacture recently announced the launch of four new electric Mercedes models. BAIC wants to increase EV production: Beijing Electric Vehicle, BAIC’s subsidiary for electric cars, has announced an ambitious five-year plan. It wants to increase annual production to 800,000 EVs and PHEVs by 2020, shooting for yearly sales worth 60bn yuan (9.1bn dollars).

China fights misuse of subsidies: Some smaller companies are suspected to get their hands on government money by producing cheap vehicles, and selling them to their own car hiring companies, which only exist on paper. They may now face investigations and scrutiny.

Tesla eyes China: Elon Musk told Engadget that he is looking to find a partner for a joint venture in China by mid-2016, as well as a location for a production facility in the country.

BAIC comes to Silicon Valley: The Chinese manufacturer has opened a research facility for ‘new-energy vehicles’ in the California region that said to roll out four to six new electric and hybrid models a year. The aim is to increase sales of Chinese new-energy vehicles abroad.

Futuristic oldtimer: ‘Midget’ is what Toyota will call its new hybrid sports car that draws inspiration from the 1945 MG TC Midget and original Caterham 7. It is expected to be presented at the Tokyo Motor Show in October, and if feedback is positive, could already be available next year. Moreover, Toyota is expected to show two new fuel cell studies, probably the Lexus LS FCV and Toyota Crown FCV.

Porsche keeps the crown: Following its win at the 24 hour of Le Mans, the carmaker’s 919 hybrid was the first to reach the finish line at the Six Hours of Nürburgring. Despite receiving a three minute penalty for exceeding fuel consumption, the second Porsche team took second place, followed by the Audi R18 e-tron quattro.

Hybrid all-wheel drive will come: In recent a peer-led interview, Koenigsegg CEO and founder Christian von Koenigsegg said that he will use a hybrid all-wheel drive in his supercars, once in-wheel motors get smaller. Right now, space and weight are still too much of an issue.

Florida town offers free electric rides: Since early May, visitors and residents can catch a ride in one of the six electric shuttles from Downtowner in Boca Raton. CEO Stephen Murray says he wanted to help free up parking spaces in the beach town. City officials loved the idea, especially because they do not pay a cent. Drivers earn their money through tips only.

Cornwall College installed four rapid-chargers at its campuses in Camborne, St Austell, Newquay and Saltash. Working together with the Cornwall Council and SSE Enterprise Utilities, these are the first of 22 public chargers planned in the area to enable students and teachers to go electric.

BAIC expansion plans.

China’s BAIC aims to sell 20,000 EVs and PHEVs this year alone. That would be three times as many as last year. Furthermore, BAIC raises its sales target every year, i.e. aiming for 40,000 plug-ins in 2016 and 200,000 in 2020. The company would then have about 15% of the Chinese EV market.

American supercar: New York-based startup Lyons Motor Car will make its public debut at the New York Auto Show next week, where it will display the LM2 Streamliner. The racer claims a top speed of 290 mph and an all-electric version is said to be in the making as well.

Electric JLRs: Rumour had it that Jaguar Land Rover is working on an all-electric SUV. Now Autocar reports that Jaguar plans to electrify the F-Pace from 2018. The same platform could also be used for an electric Range Rover soon to follow.

New BAIC facility: Chinese carmaker BAIC is currently constructing a new production facility for electric cars in the city of Laixi in Eastern China. The first models to roll off the line will be the E150EV and Weiwang 306. Up to 5,000 units could be produced annually.

Pathfinder Hybrid soon to be lost? Nissan’s website lists the 2015 Pathfinder but an updated version of its mild hybrid sibling is nowhere to be seen. When asked by Green Car Reports, the company was evasive at best, so the Pathfinder Hybrid’s destiny remains unclear.

First drive: John Voelcker took the 2016 Volvo XC90 T8 “Twin Engine” plug-in hybrid on a 96-mile trip through the Spanish countryside. The Swedes’ SUV is set to go on sale in the States this autumn and Voelcker believes the market will receive the seven-seater hybrid well.

Electric car sharing in China: BAIC Motor and Foxconn have started an electric car sharing service in Beijing. It starts with 1,000 units of the BAIC E150EV and is to be followed by Tesla´s Model S, the BYD e6 and Zinoro 1E at a later date. Maybe even a Foxconn EV will join the rental service in the future as the electronics company had revealed plans to enter the electric car market with an EV below the 15,000-dollar-mark (we reported).

New Hubject features: The Berlin-based joint venture will present its newly developed NFC access solution for charging stations operating within the intercharge network together with direct payments via credit card at the E-world energy & water trade fair in Essen, Germany this week.

Long-range commuting: Another project of Germany’s showcase regions has delivered results. The ‘LangstreckE’ (long range) project, undertaken by BMW, Chemnitz Technical University, and the city of Leipzig, saw 75 commuters using 15 BMW ActiveE over three months each. All users were able to cover most of their drives (91 percent) with the electric cars.

Go green, Glasgow: The Scottish city has now approved a ten-year transport strategy that also includes a “Low Emission Zone” feasibility study. Furthermore, Glasgow council plans to expand its current network of 64 EV charge points, adding another eight by March 2015 and expanding further in future.

Campus charging: The State University of New York (SUNY) has installed six EV charging stations at the New Paltz campus. The charge points are to be used by students, visitors, and staff, who will pay one dollar per hour for the first four hours, and five dollars per hour thereafter.

First look at BYD’s upcoming hybrid SUVs: The BYD Yuan will be powered by a 1.3-liter four cylinder, as well as two electric motors. The Song will even be offered as a pure-EV by 2016. The hybrid variant scheduled for 2015 will feature a 1.5-liter turbo four cylinder engine and two electric motors.

e-Quattro in the making: According to the magazine Car, this year’s Audi A4 and 2017 TTQ could be fitted with an AWD e-quattro system. They hybrid drivetrain consists of one combustion engine and two electric motors with a combined output of up to 408 hp in high-performance versions. Moreover, the report mentions that the TTQ could be offered with wireless inductive charging.

Tesla fighter from China: The state-owned Chinese carmaker BAIC wants to introduce an all-electric premium car next year that has a range of up to 400 km to compete with Tesla’s Model S sedan. No further details have been announced yet.

Volt called back: An unknown number of Chevy Volt built between 2011 and 2014 are recalled due to faulty rear liftgate struts. Whether the callback also concerns the Opel Ampera is not known at this time.

Test drive BMW i8: On a more professional note is Mark Vaughn’s review of the hybrid super car. He was, however, similarly enthused by what he calls the “world’s fourth-fastest hybrid” and the most affordable one too, when comparing it to the likes of Porsche and Ferrari.

Reading tip: Will the new Chevrolet Volt mark the end of the Opel Ampera as we know it? Darren Moss from Autocar speculates that the Volt’s new drivetrain could also get used in a more European-friendly car from Opel.
