GAC breaks ground on battery plant in China
The Chinese car company GAC has started building a production facility for electric car batteries in Guangzhou. With a total investment of 10.9 billion yuan (1.5 billion euros or $1.561 billion), the new factory is scheduled to go into operation in March 2024 with an annual production capacity of 6 GWh.

Samsung SDI expands research centres globally
The South Korean battery cell manufacturer Samsung SDI is expanding its research and development (R&D) activities for new battery technologies. New locations this year are being founded in the USA and Germany with a further centre planned in China next year.

Volvo Cars invests in StoreDot
Volvo Cars has invested in the Israeli battery developer StoreDot. The two companies have not disclosed the amount of the strategic investment. Previous investors in StoreDot include Daimler, Samsung, BP, VinFast and Ola Electric.

Sion Power hits milestone with Licerion cell technology
The US battery developer Sion Power has published new progress of its Licerion battery cells with lithium metal anode developed in cooperation with BASF. The project is said to have reached a milestone with a multi-layer research pouch cell achieving a residual capacity of 70 per cent after more than 2,500 cycles.

OneD to build pilot silicon-graphite-anode plant
In the USA, Californian battery developer OneD Battery Sciences is now building a first pilot production facility in Moses Lake in Washington State. OneD has designed its own manufacturing process for building silicon graphite anodes for use in electric vehicle batteries.

Samsung SDI to reduce cobalt in its batteries to zero
Leading EV battery maker Samsung has announced plans to revise its cobalt strategy. Not only will the Koreans reduce the amount of the rare resource by using nickel instead but Samsung is also working on cells that do not require any cobalt. Recycling is another measure.

Daimler to restructure its EV battery development unit
The carmaker is currently discussing to ‘insource’ this unit, according to the Stuttgarter Zeitung. Wolfgang Nieke, Chairman of the company’s works council, makes clear that he wants development specialists of Daimler’s subsidiary Accumotive to move to the headquarters in Untertürkheim.
