ACC utilises Comau and Siemens for battery production

The joint venture Automotive Cells Company (ACC) has selected the Italian automation specialist Comau to develop an integrated battery module production line for its planned Gigafactory in France. ACC has also signed an MoU with Siemens to become ACC’s preferred supplier of automation, digitalisation and electrification technology.

Electrovaya opts to build first US factory in New York State

Canada’s battery manufacturer Electrovaya has chosen New York State as the location for its first factory in the USA. Electrovaya will build the US plant in Chautauqua County and produce cells worth over one-gigawatt hour for commercial vehicles when fully operational.

Michigan to fund new battery plants in the state

Michigan is about to approve $400 million in incentives to help companies build battery factories worth $4 billion in the state. Preliminary funding approvals confirm earlier rumours of VW partner Gotion High Tech planning to manufacture in the (former) centre of the US car industry. There are also implications for BMW.

Amte joins forces with UKBIC

British cell manufacturer Amte Power has signed an agreement with the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) to have up to 60,000 of its “ultra-high-power cells” manufactured annually at the research centre over an initial 24-month period.

GM signs agreement with Posco Chemical for CAM

General Motors has signed a binding off-take agreement for cathode active material (CAM) with Posco Chemical. Under the agreement, which runs from 2023 to 2025, Posco will supply the material from its plant in the South Korean city of Gwangyang to Ultium Cells.

AMTE Power joins forces with Mahle Powertrain

UK battery cell manufacturer AMTE Power has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with UK-based German manufacturer Mahle Powertrain (MPT). The non-binding MoU the MoU between the two companies will facilitate testing of AMTE Power’s UHP cells at MPT test sites in Northampton.

Impact Clean Power Technology builds plant in Poland

Impact Clean Power Technology (ICPT), a Polish manufacturer of battery systems for heavy-duty commercial vehicles such as buses as well as stationary energy storage systems, has begun construction of a production facility called GigafactoryX. The plant will initially produce 2 GWh of batteries per year from 2024 and 5 GWh in the final stage.

Leclanché announces battery-safety breakthrough

Swiss battery manufacturer Leclanché says it has achieved a breakthrough in the safety of its lithium-ion batteries without compromising cell performance. By adding a special additive to the composition of the electrolyte formula, the company says the risk of a thermal event has been reduced by almost 80 per cent.

Britishvolt has extended its contract with WMG, University of Warwick, to develop battery cell technologies and accelerate the route to market, in a multi-million-pound deal. Following an initial 12-month project, Britishvolt and WMG are now embarking on a two-year programme of work.

CATL expands battery loops in Indonesia

CATL’s recycling subsidiary Brunp has entered into a partnership with Indonesian companies Antam and IBI. CATL wants to invest the equivalent of almost 5.5 billion euros in the Indonesia. The agreement focuses on nickel mining and processing, battery materials, battery manufacturing and battery recycling.
