Valmet has Kuka install efficient battery assembly in Finland
Automation specialist Kuka has scored a new contract and is designing “CO2-neutral” assembly systems for Valmet Automotive in Finland. The supplier says the investment into sustainable battery production is “extensive” and expects the new Kuka system to set new standards.

GAC breaks ground on battery plant in China
The Chinese car company GAC has started building a production facility for electric car batteries in Guangzhou. With a total investment of 10.9 billion yuan (1.5 billion euros or $1.561 billion), the new factory is scheduled to go into operation in March 2024 with an annual production capacity of 6 GWh.

ACC utilises Comau and Siemens for battery production
The joint venture Automotive Cells Company (ACC) has selected the Italian automation specialist Comau to develop an integrated battery module production line for its planned Gigafactory in France. CALB starts manufacturing batteries at new Hefei plant
Chinese battery manufacturer CALB (China Lithium Battery Technology) has started production at its new 50 GWh factory in Hefei and said it will increase capacity there to 150 GWh. CALB is also now listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange.

Michigan to fund new battery plants in the state
Michigan is about to approve $400 million in incentives to help companies build battery factories worth $4 billion in the state. Preliminary funding approvals confirm earlier rumours of VW partner Gotion High Tech planning to manufacture in the (former) centre of the US car industry. There are also implications for BMW.

Amte joins forces with UKBIC

Ultium Cells LLC, the battery joint venture by GM and LG, has kicked-off production in Ohio, USA. The new battery plant is the first of potentially four to come online within the next few years and is currently making battery cells for GMC’s Hummer EV.

GM signs agreement with Posco Chemical for CAM
General Motors has signed a binding off-take agreement for cathode active material (CAM) with Posco Chemical. Under the agreement, which runs from 2023 to 2025, Posco will supply the material from its plant in the South Korean city of Gwangyang to Ultium Cells.

Impact Clean Power Technology builds plant in Poland
Impact Clean Power Technology (ICPT), a Polish manufacturer of battery systems for heavy-duty commercial vehicles such as buses as well as stationary energy storage systems, has begun construction of a production facility called GigafactoryX. The plant will initially produce 2 GWh of batteries per year from 2024 and 5 GWh in the final stage.

Leclanché announces battery-safety breakthrough
Swiss battery manufacturer Leclanché says it has achieved a breakthrough in the safety of its lithium-ion batteries without compromising cell performance. By adding a special additive to the composition of the electrolyte formula, the company says the risk of a thermal event has been reduced by almost 80 per cent.

CATL expands battery loops in Indonesia
CATL’s recycling subsidiary Brunp has entered into a partnership with Indonesian companies Antam and IBI. CATL wants to invest the equivalent of almost 5.5 billion euros in the Indonesia. The agreement focuses on nickel mining and processing, battery materials, battery manufacturing and battery recycling.
