Posco to expand Tongxiang site with Huayou Cobalt

According to media reports, in an expansion of its Tongxiang site, South Korean company Posco is planning to build two new plants for electric vehicle battery materials in China. One plant is to be for cathode materials and another for precursors. Both are scheduled to go into operation in 2023.

Blackstone signs LFP supply agreement with IBU-Tec

Blackstone Technology, the German subsidiary of the Swiss commodities company Blackstone Resources, has signed a cooperation agreement with IBU-Tec Advanced Materials. The Weimar-based company is to produce lithium iron phosphate cathode materials for Blackstone on its facilities.

UK: Faraday Institution to grant £55M for battery research

In the UK, the Faraday Institution has announced that it will award up to £55 million to five UK-based consortia for research on battery chemistries, systems and manufacturing methods. The research should accelerate battery improvements for transport and grid storage.

BASF plans to lower nickel ratio in batteries

BASF is attempting to lower the nickel ratio in battery chemistry and also to work towards zero cobalt content. The goal is to reduce costs while supplying the growing market for cathode materials for electric vehicle batteries.

Posco to construct 2nd cathode factory in Korea

Korea’s largest steelmaker Posco will build a second cathode production facility in the country next year. It will produce 6,000 tons of cathode a year before they are to expand production capacity to 50,000 tons by 2022.
