Next to the Starbus Electric and Starbus Hybrid, available in nine and twelve metres, Tata also unveiled the country’s first fuel-cell-powered bus. The only bad news: there are no concrete production plans.

Scotland outlines climate goals: The Scottish government announced that it wants to lower CO2 emissions by 66 percent by 2032 (compared to 1990). The climate plan also outlines that 40 percent of individual cars and transporters, as well as 50 percent of public buses will need to be electrified until then. 30 percent of public ferries will also receive a hybrid drivetrain in the next 25 years.

e-Golf for Japan: According to Nikkei, the German carmaker wants to introduce its EV to Japan in June or July. It would be VW’s first all-electric undertaking in the country and is also part of a move to repair its image damaged by the diesel scandal.

The mothership: Daimler invested in company Starship Technologies, taking part in a 16.5m euro financing round. Starship develops ground-based, autonomous delivery robots that could be featured in Daimlers (all-electric) delivery vans in the future. A mothership concept combining the two had already been shown in September.

Five new e-trons for China: Audi and its Chinese joint venture partner signed off their 10-year strategic plan. Next to forming its own brand for mobility and digital services, the two companies are also planning to produce five more e-tron models in China, on top of the already scheduled A6 L e-tron und Q7 e-tron, and introduce them to the market there. That includes purely electric vehicles.

Kia Stinger update: According to Auto Express, Kia could launch an all-electric version of the Kia Stinger GT, which it presented at the Detroit Motor Show. The sleek five-door GT would then rival the upcoming Tesla Model 3, but is not said to hit the road before 2019. But it could then be fitted with level 3 or 4 autonomous features.

SUV Aircross as PHEV: Citroën wants to introduce its SUV Aircross to the Chinese market at the end of the year. It will also be available as a seven-seater, as well as a plug-in hybrid from 2018.

Rollout plan: GM has published a rollout schedule for the Chevrolet Bolt in the U.S. The EV is currently only available at dealerships in California and Oregon, but can already be ordered in a total of seven states. By September, the Bolt will be available across the United States.

Tesla referral programme: Tesla launched a new round of its referral programme until March 15th. Clients who successfully refer seven new buyers will receive two invitation to the Model 3 delivery event. Those who sell five vehicles get a limited-edition Powerwall and those with three successful referrals get a Model S for kids. Tesla also kicked off an annual awards programme. The first person to successfully refer 20 new buyers in each sales region – North America, Europe, or Asia Pacific – will get a Tesla Model S or X P100D.

Bolt charges with 80 kW: Inside EVs really studied the Chevy Bolt’s owner’s manual carefully and found that the electric GM can be fast-charged with up to 80 kW using CCS. The carmaker has so far been little forthcoming when it comes to confirming capabilities, but the 360-page manual filled the gaps. Moreover, GM has chosen AeroVironment as a preferred supplier for homechargers for future Bolt drivers.

Graz bets on supercapacitors: Austrian transport agency Graz Linien has commissioned four electric busses. Two 18-metre buses from CSR are equipped with supercapacitors, which enables them to fast-charge at the beginning and end of the line, as well as quickly top off along it route.

Canadian charging network expands: AddÉnergie will install 25 fast-chargers at Canadian Tire Gas+ petrol stations along busy highways in Ontario early next year. The chargers will be part of the FLO network. Natural Resources Canada is footing nearly half of the 1.8m dollar bill.

New Jersey seeks larger charging network: New Jersey is hoping for 3m dollars in federal grant money to incentivise utilities to set up chargers in the U.S. state. The investment would have to be matched by the latter. The Senate Environment and Energy Committee also approved a bill that would require EV chargers to be installed along toll roads.

German charging unification: BMW, Daimler, Ford and VW with Porsche and Audi officially declared to build a CCS ultra fast-charging network together. The joint venture will fund 350 kW charging stations along the Autobahn and other European key routes. Construction is to start next year at an initial 400 locations for a rapid recharge. The network shall grow to “thousands” of stops by the end of the decade.

Another new i3? BMW is extending its electric car offering not only with a facelift but also a new version of the BMW i3, Autocar reports. The i3S will get an uprated version of the current electric drive for a sportier ride and may also have an even longer range.

Kandi to receive subsidies: Hainan province granted Kandi 100m yuan (app. 14.5m dollars) in subsidies to develop a new electric vehicle. It will be produced in the company’s facility in Hainan, where soon 100,000 electric cars will roll off the lines (we reported).

Austria finalises mobility plan: Some 16,000 new EVs are to hit the road by 2018, and Austria is digging into its pockets to get the ball rolling. From January, it will subsidise all-electric cars with 4,000 euros (3,000 euros for businesses), and plug-in hybrids with 1,500 euros. All vehicles must be recharged using 100 percent renewable energy, the base price must be less than 50,000 euros and the electric range has to be at least 40 km. Moreover, license plates with green writing will give EVs special privileges, like free parking. Two-wheelers, all-electric utility vehicles, wallboxes, intelligent charging cables and public EV chargers also qualify for some form of subsidies.

Go Bolt for 309 a month: With the Chevy Bolt ready to arrive at dealerships in California, GM has finalised pricing. Drivers will have to pay at least 309 dollars per month with no down payment and including subsidies. And GM ordered all dealers offering the Bolt to install at least one CCS fast-charger on its premises.

BYD builds e-bus plant: The manufacturer will invest more than 2bn yuan (290m dollars) in a new manufacturing site in Xi’an, capital of the Chinese Shaanxi province. Here, BYD will produce some 5,000 electric buses per year. Nissan chucks supplier: The Japanese will sell their 41 percent stake in Calsonic to the investor KKR. The former was Nissan’s biggest supplier, specialised in standard components and air conditioning. But now that the carmaker is turning towards electric mobility, it is looking for a supplier to match those endeavours.

Bigger sells better: Back in October, Mahindra introduced a four-door version of its e2o electric car (we reported). Though it was not intended to actually replace the two-door variant, it will do exactly that, as sales of the latter never really picked up.

Chinese carmaker Roewe unveiled its i6 sedan at the Guangzhou Motor Show. The car will also be available with a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, combining a petrol engine and 82 bhp electric motor. It is also said to be the basis for the next-generation of MG Motors’ MG 6, while the drivetrain will also be used in the upcoming small SUV MG ZS, which will arrive in the UK in May.

VW-Golf-T-RocGolf line-up expanded: Volkswagen will unveil a new crossover SUV at the Geneva Motor Show in March, which is based on the VW-Golf-inspired T-Roc concept car. A plug-in hybrid T-Roc GTE and all-electric e-T-Roc are also under development, with the latter most likely featuring a new battery pack destined for its Golf siblings in 2017. Range can thus be expected around 186 miles (300 km).

C-Max successor: According to German Autobild, Ford is working on a new SUV based on its Ford Focus, said to be unveiled next year and replace the Van Focus C-Max. The new car is to go head to head with the VW Tiguan, as it is especially designed to meet the demands of European customers. A plug-in hybrid version is in the pipelines.

The all-electric Hyundai Ioniq will make its debut in the U.S. before the end of the year and before the other versions will hit the road there. While Hyundai started with introducing the hybrid variant in Europe, that won’t arrive in the U.S. until early 2017, followed by the plug-in version in Q3.

Bolt production capacity: Green Car Reports has done the math, reporting that some 35,000 units of the Chevy Bolt will roll off production lines at the GM factory in Orion Township, Michigan, per year. New Nissan EVs? The Leaf might get company soon as Nissan considers to electrify more segments. A small EV with technology from the Renault Zoe is possible, while an electric SUV or crossover may be offered on the European market. Nissan invested 5.4bn dollars in electric cars such as the Leaf and must make sure to satisfy “as many types of customer as possible,” Gareth Dunsmore, head of Nissan’s EV programme in Europe said.

BYD growing in Europe: The IAA saw the Chinese firm present an electric coach for sightseeing and shuttle duties which can travel up to 200 km on one charge. Furthermore, BYD plans to build a production facility for buses in Europe, which will likely be set up in Hungary.

How to order a Chevy Bolt: GM released the Chevy Bolt EV “Ordering Guide” that lists all available options. CCS fast-charging is 750 dollar extra for example. Colours range from metallic to blue and red. There is only one 60 kWh battery option as expected.

Soul update: Kia is tweaking its Soul crossover range. The design will be updated and a new petrol engine offered. If the Kia Soul EV will be improved, i.e. with longer range, is not yet known.

Australia pushes zero emission: According to Motoring, Australia is looking to scrap the Luxury Tax for (partially) electrified cars, as well as implement other incentives to push sales of electric and hybrid vehicles. What the measures will look like is still not clear.

No fees for EVs: As one of 14 incentives to push electric mobility, New Zealand extended the EV road user charge exemptions until 2021, meaning EV drivers safe up to 438 dollars. The government is also looking into whether electrically powered utility vehicles could benefit.

Hybrid on track: Ariel has unveiled the Aero-P Atom Concept with hybrid powertrain. And while it is not said to directly influence a production car, it could mean that Ariel is looking eventually create a hybrid version on the Atom.

Is Tesla closing the solar deal? The planned SolarCity takeover may go down very soon, Reuters reports, citing people close to the matter. The merger could be signed in the coming days. However, there is still a possibility that negotiation won’t bear any fruits after all.

Hyundai’s H2 plans: Hyundai’s next fuel cell model will be ready in time for the winter Olympics in 2018 in Pyeonchang. It will be a mix of CUV and SUV and feature a smaller electric motor with more output, as well as a fuel cell that requires less platinum in the catalyst.

AMG hybrid? Mercedes-AMG is allegedly planning a super sports car with hybrid drivetrain for its 50th anniversary in 2017. The R50 would have 1,300 hp and feature two electric motors to drive the front wheels. The limited edition hybrid will then sell for two or three million euros.

Audi manager signs with Tesla: Peter Hochholdinger, the former Senior Director of Production of Audi’s A4, A5, and Q5, joined the EV team as VP of Vehicle Production. He will be responsible for speeding up Model S and Model X production and for getting the Model 3 manufacturing programme off the ground. Hochholdinger replaces Greg Reichow, who left Tesla earlier this month. Josh Ensign, ex Tesla VP of manufacturing, has not been replaced yet.
