Chevy Bolt Record.

GM set a new record with 1,292 Chevy Bolt sold this April. It is the second time its EV has entered the 4-digit realm since sales started in December 2016, when GM sold 579 followed by a strong January with 1,162 units. Still, the sales target of 30,000 Bolt in the first year seems a little far off.

Another Tesla challenger comes from Chinese EV start-up Future Mobility, which is supported by Foxconn as well as Tencent and led by former BMW-i-Manager Carsten Breitfeld. It has set the launch of its first concept vehicle for the second half of 2017. The mid-size SUV with a range of 500 km is to roll off the lines in 2019 and be priced between 300,000 and 400,000 Yuan (40,000 to 53,000 euros).

GM presents Chinese Volt: The Buick Velite 5, basically a version of the Chevy Volt with range extender for the Chinese market, has found the spotlights of the Shanghai show. The electric range is 116 km according to local standards and prices start at 265,800 Yuan (38,600 dollars).

Tesla with risky production strategy: In order to win time, Tesla intends to skip the limited production phase using lower grade equipment, Reuters has learnt. Instead, CEO Elon Musk intends to start mass production of its Model 3 directly with final equipment, ignoring approved car industry standards.

Conti to invest in EV tech: Until 2021, the car supplier wants to boost its electric drive division with additional 300m euros. With this strategy the company hopes to increase the turnover in this unit from today 130m to then 1bn euros and to further push to up to 2bn by 2025. This anticipated sales growth shall “more than compensate” the expected decrease of business for conventional cars.

GM’s electric strategy for China: In the following three years, the American car giant intends to launch at least ten EV and PHEV for the Chinese market, said GM’s China CEO Matt Tsien in the course of the Shanghai Motor Show. He thus joined the rest of the carmakers in their electric promises made in the light of expected new energy quotas by the Chinese authorities. GM calculates with a sales potential of 150,000 electrified vehicles until 2020 and up to half a million until 2025. First aim is to start production of an all-electric model in the Asian-Pacific region within the next two years.

The report speaks of a possible A9 that might emerge 2020 under the label C e-tron – thus being the third in Audi’s electrical line-up. Tesla recalls 53,000 Model S and X as they are equipped with a faulty gear in the parking brakes. According to the carmaker, the issue was caused by a third-party supplier and could end up in problems to release the parking brake. The recall affects vehicles launched between February and October 2016.

While China COO Yasuhide Mizuno had no details, he also promised a plug-in hybrid SUV for 2018 in Shanghai, two years earlier than initially planned. An FCV was mentioned too, hence it is likely to see the Clarity in all its new energy vehicle variants making an entry into China rather sooner than later. For now, Honda debuted the CR-V Hybrid at the Auto Shanghai. Regular market entry is scheduled for later this year.

Porsche will not stay a stranger to electrification either it appears as CEO Oliver Blume spoke of expansion beyond the Mission E in Shanghai. Next to more all-electric models, the PHEV line-up could be extended as well – all in a bid to obey Chinese regulators, although Blume insisted to “find the technology as such interesting” for Porsche’s sporty drive.

K is for Koenigsegg that delivers the power for Qoros four-door supercar which has taken its place among the Shanghai debutantes. The Qoros K-EV utilises four electric drives that add up to 640 kW. A small series may be produced by 2019.

Electric mini-van: If the Iconiq 7 will become what its name suggests remains to be seen but the Iconiq Motors manufacturer has concrete production plans for its six-seater EV. Starting with 15,000 units in 2019, production is to scale up rapidly with 110,000 MPVs planned in 2025. The design was developed by W Motors with the platform and driveline coming from Magna in large parts. Plus, the electric van shall be autonomous by 2023.

Electrify America with 150kW: In the course of VW’s dieselgate penalty payment in the States, the German carmaker and EPA have now released the national plan for the first instalment of 300m dollars. It is to set up a nationwide quick charging network, including around 240 charging points with a minimum output of 150 kW but suitable to CCS, CHAdeMO and AC and open protocols. The project is to start in the second quarter of 2018. On top, VW has to implement around 300 charging stations with up to 50 kW in 11 metropolitan areas. The proposal still awaits approval.

Autonomous Bolt fleet: There exist 50 self-driving Chevrolet Bolt in three U.S. cities today but GM plans to raise their game. According to new documents handed in at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), 300 additional Bolts are soon to hit the roads of San Francisco, Detroit, and Scottsdale. If they do, it would make GM’s autonomous EV fleet the world’s largest.

Reserved for EVs: New Zealand’s capital Wellington plans to keep 100 parking spaces free for electric cars and those to share exclusively during the course of this year. 37 bays have been assigned already and will be equipped with EV charging opportunities.

Paid to charge off-peak: EV owners in New York City and Westchester County are able to benefit from a new reward programme when charging their EV at times only few do. Electric utility Con Edison claims to pay 5 cents for each kilowatt-hour of charging during off-peak hours.

E-tron Sportback Audi’s 2nd EV? 2018 will see the introduction of Audi’s first fully electric model. However, now another seems to be in the pipeline. Auto Motor und Sport believes the second EV is to be the e-tron Sportback, which could hit the shelves no later than 2019.

Tesla is now the second strongest carmaker in the USA as the EV maker’s record-breaking quarter echoed strongly at Wall Street. Tesla shares reached an all-time record of 294.15 USD on Monday, catapulting Tesla above Ford in terms of market capitalisation and with only GM still ahead.

BYD improves performance further: BYD’s 2016 statistics show that the Chinese group accumulated 96,000 sales of EV and PHEV which represent a market share of 23 percent. Total turnover rose by 79 percent to 5,05bn yuan (733m dollars).

New electric bus player: Thai Kwaithong Motor is to start assembly of its first electric bus model. It also signed a 3bn-baht contract (82m euros) to provide 200 electric buses to a local transit operator.

Adaptation problems.

Yes, electric cars are a fairly new technology (for some) and clearly pose their own problems (for some), esp. at the point of sale. One Chevy dealer in particular failed to see an EVs USP as he transferred his ICE sales talk directly: “This Bolt EV is nicely equipped with a precision tuned electric drive engine — it will wring every last mile it can out of a drop of fuel.”

VW has chosen battery supplier: The Germans have moved on from planning to the next stage as the design of the VW I.D. built upon the MEB platform is to be confirmed by August. At the same time, battery suppliers were selected and are under contract already, although it has not been disclosed, who will power Volkswagen’s electric concept/s. Two more electric models are to follow until 2022 of which one will be the I.D. Buzz microbus.

Citroën electrifies further: The French now offer the E-Berlingo Multispace with an electric drive. It is the same motor utilised in the van version of the Berlingo already and offers a range of 170 km. The latest electric car joins Citroën’s EV range consisting of the C-ZERO, E-MEHARI and Berlingo LCV.

The only thing that stands between the microbus and reality is a global go, as VW first wants to see reactions from China. Reception in Europe and the States have been positive. On top of the ID Buzz, Shanghai will also see the unveiling of an electric SUV concept with an electric saloon concept to follow later this year as well.

Model S discontinued: Tesla will stop selling the Model S 60 and 60 D from April, 17 due to low demand for the 60 kWh power pack. This leaves the 75 kWh pack as the entry level battery option, or better, removes the option to buy just 60 kWh of a power pack that always held 75 kWh in fact.

Iconic EV for real: The BMW Isetta based Microlino EV is scheduled for production before the year’s end at Italian partner Tazzari. Already, Swiss Micro Mobility Systems has received more than 2,600 pre-orders for its electric micro car that shall be made available for about 12,000 euros.

Turbine hybrid to go serial: Hybrid Kinetic Group saw the positive reactions it had hoped for in Geneva and will thus produce its hybrid sedan H600 with turbine range extender. The model has been designed by Pininfarina and will go on sale in the States and China from 2019 or 2020. Additionally, Hybrid Kinetic plans to present two more concepts next month.

Toyota to invest in UK plant: The Japanese carmaker has earmarked 240m pounds to invest in its Derbyshire plant as it readies its Burnaston factory to produce vehicles on its news platform called TNGA. The first one on the list will be the Bentayga, scheduled for 2018, followed by the next generation Continental GT.

Chinese manufacturer GAC Motors presented a PHEV crossover called Enspirit at the motor show in Detroit. It has an all-electric range of 80 km. The carmaker also showed its all-electric GE3, which is based on GAC’s new EV platform. Range is estimated at 300 km. The GE3 will become available in China from June and will be marketed under the Trumpchi brand.

New Lexus: The carmaker wants to launch the series version of the UX Concept that it unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October. Autocar learned the compact SUV will also be offered as a hybrid under the name of UX250h and will apparently replace the Lexus CT. Moreover, Lexus is planning a seven-seater version of its RX, which will also be sold as a hybrid from 2018.

No PHEVs for the U.S.: The diesel scandal also affects plug-in hybrids, Car and Driver reports. Apparently, the VW Group scrapped plans to sell in the Audi Q7 e-tron in the States, as well as PHEV variants for the A6 and A7, which would combine an electric motor and 3-L diesel engine. There will also be no modified versions featuring petrol engines for the U.S., meaning the Audi A3 e-tron will remain the only Audi PHEV sold there.

Electric start-up scene: U.S. start-up Rivian Automotive has purchased a former Mitsubishi plant in Michigan, investing 175m dollars and wants to begin churning out EVs from 2019. A first model could already be unveiled this year.

No redemption: The 10 biggest oil companies have announced a 1bn dollar fund to reduce their climate change guilt. Different from what was expected, it will not include renewables but focus on reducing leaks of natural gas, capturing and store emissions when gas is burned to produce electricity, and increasing the fuel efficiency of vehicles. So, they pay each other to keep business running as usual.

No more diesel-electric: The DS 5 Hybrid has been withdrawn from sale in Great Britain because it accounted for only 3 percent of the total DS 5 volume this year. This only applies on the isles.

Autonomous lift in a Bolt: GM and Lyft aim to have a fleet of self-driving cabs ready by January 2019. The Chevy Bolt is the most likely vehicle for the undertaking that could see 725 EVs hit the roads. Already, the companies are testing prototypes in San Francisco and Scottsdale (we reported).

The first 3,000 electric trikes of planned 100,000 units will arrive on the Philippines this September. Delivery is to be completed by the end of the year. The ministry of energy issued a tender for the next 6,000 electric three-wheelers. Back then, Bemac Electric reportedly won the first bid.

Park & Fly: BMW added a new service to its ReachNow fleet in Seattle. Members of the carsharing can now park and pick-up cars from the fleet which includes about 100 i3 at Sea-Tac airport. There are complimentary shuttles from the garage to the gates and back.

Hire a Twizy no more: At least not on the Isle of Wight, where 15 of Renault’s little EVs were available. The operator took the service offline just 5 months after launch and after receiving 40,000 GBP in funding but gave no explanation. His 26 rental Twizy in New Forest are still up and running.

Sino-Japanese EV alliance: BAIC and Panasonic want to build a EV component factory in the Chinese city of Tianjin. BAIC will hold 54 percent of stakes, Panasonic the remaining 46%. Investing billions in electrification: Daimler announced that it will invest a total of 14.5bn euros in research and development. More than half has been earmarked for alternative drivetrains, like the new platform for electric cars and the expansion of its batter facility in Kamenz, Germany.

Chrysler-Pacifica-HybridSelf-driving minivans: Google is officially partnering with Fiat-Chrysler to further develop the former’s self-driving vehicle technology. The internet giant will more than double its fleet, adding 100 Google technology-equipped 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans. Some will already hit the road later this year.

Autonomous taxis: GM and Lyft will begin testing a fleet of self-driving Chevy Bolt electric taxis on public roads within a year. Details, including the location, are still unknown, but customers will be able to opt in or out of the pilot when ordering a taxi. At the beginning, the cars will still have a driver for safety reasons.

Longer battery lifecycles: The Technical University of Munich and the Research Centre Jülich have pinpointed what makes lithium-ion batteries wilt after several charges. They blame the production of a highly reactive singelt oxygen and expect lightweight alternatives to be the best solution.

Futuristic concept: Lingyun presented a streamlined two-wheeled concept car at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show. The wheels can turn up to 90 degrees, enabling the car to turn on its own axis. Equipped with a 25 kWh battery pack, the company still claims a range of up to 400 km. That seems a lot, but is apparently possible due to the cars reduced weight and aerodynamics.

GM engine facility: General Motors is readying its latest Powertrain Performance and Racing Center in Pontiac, Michigan. There, the firm will work on race engines but also on fuel cell and hybrid technology. Opening in July, GM hopes to facilitate transfer between performance and production.

Bentley hyper car? Depending on the Bentayga’s success, the British brand might return to the race track, although not in the LMP1 class. Such a race car could then also make it onto the road, in a toned down version of course, and could thus utilise technology from Porsche’s Mission E by 2020.

Motorola money for MIT: Pellion Technologies, a start-up founded by a team from MIT, has received an undisclosed amount from Motorola Solutions. Pellion is commercialising magnesium-ion battery technology, said to have double the energy density of comparable Li-ion cells.

Leaf deliveries halted: Nissan has stopped deliveries of the 2016 Leaf in Europe, Transport Evolved reports. The reason seems to be a problem with the new NissanConnect EV telematics system. Apparently, the system keeps rebooting itself unexpectedly. Nissan is trying to fix the issue, but has not set a date for resuming deliveries yet.

EV expertise in the Far East: Harmony Futeng Internet and Intelligent Electric Vehicle Company has hired Carsten Breitfeld, formerly head of development for the BMW i8, as its new CEO. He is backed by COO Daniel Kirchert, who gathered experience at Nissan-Dongfeng and BMW-Brilliance in China. 75m for electric transport: The British government and industry awarded almost 75m pounds to five projects. The biggest bulk (46.5m GBP) goes to the London Taxi Corporation to develop electric cabs. Morgan Motors receives funding to develop hybrid- and electric drives for sports cars, while AGM Batteries is working on battery packs. Joint fuel cell production: Honda and GM will set up a joint fuel cell production facility. The firms have been working together on the technology since 2013 and aim for a mass market eco car. The move is expected to decrease costs. Serial production of fuel cells will start by 2025 at the latest.

Fuel cell price break: A team from the University of Delaware was able to replace platinum catalysts with cheaper nickel ones, switching the operating environment from acidic to basic. The resulting hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cell is hoped to considerably bring down cost of FCVs.

Evatran eyes China: Chinese supplier VIE is pouring 3.2m dollars into Evatran, whose inductive charging technology will also become available in China.
