Korea: public-private hydrogen station network

South Korea’s government and leading corporations of the country agreed to start a business with the aim to install a network of hydrogen filling stations. Hyundai as well as the state-owned Korea Gas Corporation are part of the deal set for this November.

£8.8M OLEV funding to improve H2 infrastructure in UK

A consortium including ITM Power, Shell, Toyota, Honda and Hyundai has won £8.8 million in funding from the British Department for Transport. They are to improve the UK’s network of hydrogen filling stations by improving existing ones and also installing new sites.

According to information from TÜV Süd, Germany had the largest growth in hydrogen fuelling stations in the world last year. A total of 24 public fueling stations were installed in Germany, while the global market managed to construct a total of 64.

Study tip: According to a recent study by SCI, buses with alternative drivetrains already account for 6.8 percent of bus sales worldwide. Hybrids overtook buses powered by liquefied natural gas, and thanks to large orders from China, electric buses take third place. Manufacturers, who still refuse to get on board with electrification, only have themselves to blame.

Reading tip: Southern Californians are complaining that hydrogen filling stations in the state are not reliable and are sometimes out of service for weeks at a time. Part of the problem may be that while FCV manufactures like Toyota and Hyundai offer free filling up, but are not responsible for the hydrogen fuel or the station.

Worldwide, 17 hydrogen stations have been opened in 2014, according to H2stations.org. Most of them (82) stand in Europe, 63 can be found in the States, one in South America and 38 around Asia.

Hydrogen fuelling stations.

Worldwide, there are some 168 hydrogen fuelling stations currently in operation – 26 of those are located in Germany, 67 across the USA. And while 11 new stations went online in 2013, the overall number of H2-stations has decreased. One year ago, the number was still at 208.
