BMW to establish closed recycling loop for batteries

The BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) joint venture has for the first time established a closed cycle in China for the reuse of the raw materials nickel, lithium and cobalt from high-voltage batteries. Compared to the use of newly mined material, CO2 emissions are to be reduced by 70 per cent.

Anglo American presents fuel cell heavy-duty mining truck

Mining and resources group Anglo American has unveiled the prototype of what it claims is the world’s largest hydrogen-electric mining vehicle. The nuGen dump truck combines multiple fuel cells with a 1.2 MWh battery pack for a total output of 2 MW and can carry a payload of 290 tons.

Tesla finds new nickel supply with Vale

Tesla lists all its direct suppliers of battery materials for the first time in its current sustainability report. In addition to already known contracts for supplies of nickel, lithium and cobalt, it is now officially confirmed for the first time that Tesla has concluded a long-term supply contract for nickel with the mining company Vale.

CATL to start mining lithium in Yichun

The Chinese battery cell manufacturer CATL has secured the mining rights for a lithium mine in Yichun in Jiangxi province for 865 million yuan (123 million euros). According to CATL, the mine is expected to yield 2.66 million tonnes of lithium metal oxide.

Mercedes wants to halve their CO2 footprint by 2030

Mercedes-Benz aims to reduce CO2 emissions per passenger car by more than half over the entire life cycle by the end of this decade compared to 2020. Redwood Materials sources batteries from Ford & Volvo

Redwood Materials, founded by ex-Tesla CTO JB Straubel, has launched a recycling programme for electric and hybrid vehicle batteries in California. Ford and Volvo Cars are the first car manufacturers to support the programme with their batteries. Redwood is also calling on other manufacturers to join the programme.
