LGES orders lithium and cobalt from Canada

Battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution has signed cooperation agreements with three major suppliers in Canada for the supply of lithium and cobalt. The supply contract for cobalt sulphate is already binding, while the two lithium agreements still have to be finally negotiated.

Piedmont Lithium to process lithium hydroxide in the USA

Piedmont Lithium has announced the construction of a large lithium hydroxide processing plant in the USA. The facility is to be built in Etowah in the state of Tennessee and will produce 30,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide per year. The start of operations is planned for 2025.

Tozero raises €3.5 million in funding

Munich-based startup Tozero, which specializes in recycling lithium-ion batteries, has raised €3.5 million in a pre-seed round. According to the company, it developed a novel process to recover critical materials from batteries. The funds will be used to build a prototype plant.

Honda has entered into a strategic partnership with the Japanese trading company Hanwa to ensure stable procurement of battery materials required for its longer-term electric offensive. The agreement centres around nickel, cobalt and lithium in particular.

Tesla has signed new contracts with two of its existing Chinese suppliers of battery materials. Huayou Cobalt and CNGR Advanced Material signed pricing agreements with Tesla for deliveries through the middle of this decade.

The American chemical company Albemarle is planning to build a huge new lithium processing plant with an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes in the southeast of the USA. The exact location has not yet been determined, but it should preferably be near a large port.

LGES orders lithium from the USA

South Korean battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution has signed its first offtake agreement with a US-based lithium supplier. The agreement with Compass Minerals, which is still non-binding, provides for LGES to be supplied with lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide from 2025.

Stellantis invests in Vulcan Energy Resources

Stellantis has invested €50 million in Vulcan Energy Resources and becomes the second-largest shareholder of the German-Australian lithium producer with an eight per cent stake. Vulcan and Stellantis have also extended their binding off-take agreement for lithium hydroxide by five to ten years.

The BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) joint venture has just established a closed cycle recycling operation in China for the reuse of the raw materials nickel, lithium and cobalt from high-voltage batteries. Compared to the use of newly mined material, CO2 emissions are to be reduced by 70 per cent.

CATL to start mining lithium in Yichun

The Chinese battery cell manufacturer CATL has secured the mining rights for a lithium mine in Yichun in Jiangxi province for 865 million yuan (123 million euros). According to CATL, the mine is expected to yield 2.66 million tonnes of lithium metal oxide.
