14 new e-buses introduced in Eastern Switzerland and Liechtenstein
With the timetable change, battery-electric buses are being introduced for the first time in the Oberthurgau and Sargans–Werdenberg regions, as announced by the public transport operator. Five of the new vehicles are assigned to the Sargans depot and will serve various routes. “Bus Ostschweiz is now providing rail supplementary services on behalf of the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) from the Sargans depot. On evening services between Chur and Landquart, battery-electric buses are specifically deployed,” the company stated.
The transport company is also responsible for operating LIEmobil’s bus services in Liechtenstein. Since mid-December, three additional battery-electric buses have been stationed at the Ruggell depot, bringing the total number of battery-electric buses in operation to eight. The Ruggell depot has been fully adapted for battery-electric bus operations and can charge up to 24 electric buses simultaneously. “This enables Bus Ostschweiz to create a future-proof infrastructure for the further expansion of electromobility in Liechtenstein’s public transport system,” the announcement stated.
Another significant step was taken at the Amriswil site, where the local depot has been extensively refurbished and adapted to meet the requirements of electromobility. This includes upgrades to the charging infrastructure, as well as workshops and operational processes optimised for battery-electric buses. With the deployment of five battery-electric buses, Bus Ostschweiz is introducing electric buses to regular line services in the canton of Thurgau for the first time under its own name—following the earlier use of two electric buses in Frauenfeld’s city bus service. “Lastly, we are pleased that another electric bus has been added to the Rheintal Bus fleet at the Altstätten depot, where an electric bus has already been in operation for some time,” Bus Ostschweiz wrote.
The announcement does not specify which models were procured. However, it is clear that more electric buses will follow, as these deployments are described as “important first steps in implementing the E-Bus Roadmap 2023–2036.” By 2036, the entire bus fleet is set to be electrified.
“With the commissioning of a total of 14 new battery-electric buses, we have reached a major milestone in our fleet electrification journey. We are particularly proud that, with the fully electromobility-optimised Amriswil depot, we are now introducing electric buses to regular line services for regional transport in the canton of Thurgau for the first time,” said Roland Ochsner, Managing Director of the Bus Ostschweiz Group. “This represents a targeted investment in sustainable, future-proof mobility for Eastern Switzerland.”
