Renault is rolling out Google Gemini to all models equipped with the OpenR Link infotainment system and integrated Google services. The free over-the-air (OTA) update began rolling out in mid-June and does not require a workshop visit. According to Renault, the update covers its entire European model range, from the Twingo E-Tech Electric to the Rafale, as well as additional models in international markets.

Gemini replaces Google Assistant and is intended to make voice interaction with the vehicle more natural. According to Renault, the AI assistant understands conversational context, can process more complex requests and execute multiple commands in sequence. In addition to answering general questions, users can control functions such as climate control, navigation, the radio and vehicle settings via voice commands.

The new feature is integrated into Renault’s OpenR Link infotainment system, which debuted in 2022 with the Mégane E-Tech Electric and has since been expanded continuously. Alongside Google Maps and the Google Play Store, Renault has added streaming services and navigation features tailored to electric vehicles. With the integration of Gemini, the carmaker is further expanding the capabilities of its software platform.

Once the update has been installed, Gemini can be activated via the central display, provided the user is logged in with a Google account. Renault has opted for an opt-in model, allowing customers to decide whether they want to use the AI assistant. According to the carmaker, the update does not affect the validity of existing connectivity services.

Gemini gains direct access to vehicle functions

Unlike the Gemini version available through Android Auto, Renault’s implementation is integrated directly into the vehicle’s systems. This allows the AI assistant to adjust the interior temperature, set navigation destinations and incorporate vehicle data, such as the remaining battery range, into route planning. At the same time, the connection to the user’s Google account is maintained, making personal content available across devices.

The deeper integration also raises the importance of data protection. According to Renault, the vehicle and usage data processed depend on the user’s account settings and the permissions granted.

The carmaker has also announced additional features. One of them is Gemini Live, which is scheduled to arrive via a future software update. The conversational feature is designed to enable more natural dialogues and process multiple voice commands in sequence without requiring users to repeat the activation command.

With the integration of Gemini, Renault is adding generative AI capabilities to its existing software platform, following a broader industry trend. The aim is to expand voice control functions and reduce the need for manual inputs while driving.
