Improved formation cycling: Collaborative project EffiForm unites Thyssenkrupp System Engineering with VARTA, BMW, Fraunhofer IKTS, TU Munich and others to look into the solid electrolyte interface formation process in Li-ion batteries in detail. Effiform aims to optimise the material, process and systems technologies used in the initial charging of lithium-ion cells for industrial applications. It could lower prices considerably as formation accounts for about a third of the cost in battery production.

Advanced aerodynamics: Not much is known about Mercedes’ electric series but Anke Kleinschmit, Daimler’s VP for Research and Sustainability and Chief Environmental Officer, hinted at “active aerodynamics measures” that could also be applied to EVs.

Autonomous Formula Student: The racing series for students will introduce the Formula Student Driverless (FSD) class next year. It shall attract students from informatics or robotics. This year’s overall winner of the Formula Student Electric was the KA-RaceIng-Team from KIT.

Self-healing batteries: A team at University of Windsor in Canada observed self-healing of cracks in silicon-aluminum anodes for Li-ion batteries. The closure happened during de-lithiation and was seen through an optical microscope.
