UK: Believ takes over London-based Switch EV

UK electric vehicle charge point operator Believ has purchased assets in Switch EV. The latter provides a scalable platform that provides real-time data on chargers to help with charge point management.

The cloud-based charge point management allows Believ to, for instance, monitor chargers and predict maintenance. Moreover, it allows for other data management functionalities, such as Plug&Charge and vehicle-to-grid capabilities, essentially making EV driving more convenient, as Believ CEO Guy Barlett explained. “Convenience and seamless experience is how we are going to persuade more drivers to make the transition. More EV drivers on the road helps us deliver on our mission for cleaner air for all,” he is quoted as saying by The Energyst.

As part of the acquisition, Marc Mültin, founder and CEO of Switch EV, as well as four engineers have joined the Believ workforce.

“We bring decades of experience, and being co-authors and trainers of global charging communication standards helps to ensure the very best levels of data communication functionality,” Mültin said. “We bring decades of experience, and being co-authors and trainers of global charging communication standards helps to ensure the very best levels of data communication functionality.”

Mültin had been working on the international EV communication standards ISO 15118 (Plug&Charge) and the latest OCPP 2.0.1 himself. These protocols also underpinned the Switch platform from the start.

Less than a year ago, EcoG, a provider of charging systems for electric vehicles based in Munich, Germany, took over Switch EV’s charger operating system Josev. It enables the integration of ISO 15118-2 and next-generation ISO 15118-20 features, which include bi-directional AC and DC power flow and the Megawatt Charging System (MCS). In January 2024, it was certified for Plug&Charge with Hubject. The company had also secured an investment from ABB in April 2023.
