Rivian receives €3.5 million from Serbia

Serbia's Ministry of the Economy has promised Rivian SE Europe 3.5 million Euros in subsidies. The money will be used to support its European technology centre and set up centres of excellence in Belgrade.

The subsidies will be paid in two instalments. The company will receive around 3.2 million euros this year and the remaining funds in 2026. As a prerequisite for the funding, Rivian SE Europe will have had to hire at least 370 people by the end of 2024 and invest 6.6 million dollars in the planned centres by the end of 2025. Moreover, the company has to maintain a workforce of a minimum of 370 people for at least five years.

The number of jobs seems low, however, when the company applied for the subsidy in August 2022, Rivian SE Europe had no employees – even though it was founded in July 2022. At the end of 2023, Rivian SE Europe had 85 employees.

The company belongs to Rivian Europe B.V., based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and specialises in computer programming. It ultimately serves US electric carmaker Rivian Automotive.

The above-mentioned R&D centre in the Serbian capital officially opened in December 2022. The subsidies were awarded in December 2024 but have only now been made public.
