Amperfied enters the DC charging business

Amperfied, the charging infrastructure subsidiary of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, is presenting its modular DC fast charging solution under the name Amperfied Dynamic DC at the Power2Drive trade fair. Amperfied also intends to offer associated charging services.

It marks the first time Heidelberg has entered the DC charging market with Amperfied, after previously offering AC home charging wallboxes.

The Amperfied Dynamic DC is not a standalone charging station, but a central power unit to which up to six charging towers (with two charging points each) can be connected. The central unit manages the available charging capacity in order to optimise the overall system based on the number and type of vheicles connected. This therefore avoids unused capacity being retained in the central unit – which Amperfied sees as having a ‘clear advantage over rigid standalone solutions’.

Additionally, the unit’s maximum of twelve total charging points does not have to be fully utilised at all times; instead, it can be reconfigured flexibly and expanded at a later date. If the highest maximum number of charging points is required, charging of up to 300 amps and 240kW is possible with CCS2 connectors. However, if the highest individual output is required, operators can connect a maximum of eight charging points in order to supply up to 500 amps and 480kW – what Amperfied calls a ‘needs-based mix of both’.

What’s more, the dispensers can be installed slightly away from the central power unit and, with a slim design and touchscreen input, they can be installed without wasting space. The whole unit is based on PIONIX BaseCamp software, which its UI, predictive maintenance, monitoring and other functions are based on.

Beyond that, Amperfied is offering its DC products using an availability-based operating hours model, minimising risk for operators and cutting the initial investment required. Robin Karpp, the company’s MD, said: “Instead of buying pure hardware, our customers only pay when they can actually sell energy. This is how we create aligned interests. We are responsible for a functioning charging infrastructure. The operators only have to worry about the utilisation of the charging park.”
