Toyota unveils estate version of bZ4X

Toyota is set to launch an estate car version of its all-electric SUV model the bZ4X next year. It will be called the BZ4X Touring and will be 14cm longer than the standard bZ4X. Its European launch is planned for the first half of 2026.

The bZ4X Touring features 33 per cent more trunk space compared to the regular model, with 600 litres of storage. According to Toyota, the variant is intended to be a spacious family vehicle and “the ideal companion for an active lifestyle.” In typical Toyota fashion, its product announcement is focused on long-range, powerful drivetrains and short charging times.

Three years ago, Toyota launched the bZ4X – its first all-electric model after years of focusing on hybrid drivetrains. The original mid-size SUV was available with either a 150 kW FWD or an AWD system combining two 80 kW electric motors. The battery had an energy capacity of 71.4 kWh at launch. In terms of range, the FWD version has a range of up to 516km, with the AWD pushing 470km.

Toyota has since significantly expanded its presence in the all-electric segment and even introduced three more SUVs in March: the new Urban Cruiser, the new C-HR+, and the revised and further improved bZ4X.

But back to the new bZ4x Touring. It is 4.83m long and 1.67m high, and as previously mentioned, the boot space is 600 litres. This means the bZ4X Touring offers enough space for a family’s vacation luggage or for all kinds of leisure and sports equipment. Thanks to the 40:60 split folding rear seat, the space can be easily and conveniently expanded as needed, according to Toyota. The maximum towing capacity of the bZ4X Touring is 1,500 kilograms. As with the bZ4X, customers can choose between front-wheel and all-wheel drive with the Touring version. The targeted maximum power for the front-wheel drive model is 165 kW, while the all-wheel drive bZ4X Touring is expected to be the most powerful Toyota electric model on the market with 280 kW.

In both drive variants, the new bZ4X Touring features a lithium-ion battery with a gross capacity of 74.7 kWh and, depending on the equipment, a 22 kW on-board charger. The maximum fast charging capacity (DC) is 150 kW. The maximum WLTP range is expected to be 560 kilometres, although homologation has not yet been completed.

To improve performance and charging times, there’s a new water cooling and pre-conditioning system, which can be activated manually or automatically when approaching a rapid charging station. This ensures the battery is at the optimal temperature at the start of charging, which is particularly useful in colder climates.

The eAxles (electric drive axles) utilize new silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors and operate with greater efficiency and higher performance, while being lighter and more compact.

Compared to the bZ4X, the new Touring model boasts a more rugged, adventure-inspired look. This is supported by a number of styling details, such as the black finish on the wheel arches, black rims, and roof rails. The most significant visual changes concern the extended rear end of the vehicle, which features a new lower bumper and LED taillights with a more modern, ‘outdoorsy’ look.

Inside, there’s a new center console for easy access to digital devices and a redesigned instrument panel with a standard 14-inch multimedia display. A dedicated navigation function automatically selects a route with recommended, convenient charging stations based on the vehicle’s current battery charge level and remaining range.

The bZ4X Touring is planned to launch in Europe in the first half of 2026. Toyota has not yet announced pricing. The current bZ4X – even before the announced facelift – starts at €42,900. Further vehicle specifications will be announced prior to market launch.
