Chinese battery giant CATL is deepening its clean tech focus as it concluded its anticipated €4.1 billion Hong Kong IPO today. At the centre of this expansion is CharGo, its subsidiary specialising in mobile charging and energy storage robotics. Established last year, CharGo aims to fill infrastructure gaps by offering autonomous EV charging robots—especially in locations where conventional charging stations are either unavailable, occupied, or inaccessible.

These robots, bookable via smartphone, are designed to support on-demand charging without fixed infrastructure, offering a flexible solution for urban and high-density areas. CharGo CEO Kevin Xu told Chinese media that the goal is not only to support EV uptake, but to help build a closed-loop energy ecosystem.

The company has already deployed over 100 robots, mostly for pilot schemes, and plans to scale aggressively, with between 5,000 and 15,000 units expected to be rolled out across 100 cities in China within two years.

CharGo anticipates entering overseas markets from the second half of 2026, targeting Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. According to internal estimates, mobile charging could represent up to 20% of China’s EV charging market by 2030 – equating to a market worth 50 billion yuan (around 6.2 billion euros), as the South China Morning Post reports.

While CATL’s EV battery segment remains dominant, the company is actively investing downstream to diversify. This includes strategic stakes in vehicle manufacturers, battery-swapping firms (CATL plans to take over Nio’s battery business, for example), grid operators, and zero-carbon infrastructure projects. CharGo could play a key role in this strategy, aligning with CATL’s broader shift from battery supplier to integrated energy solutions provider.
