German e-mobility firm Ladeplan has been acquired by retail database company RetailSonar. The transaction will see the two companies collaborate on location planning solutions for EV charging infrastructure.

RetailSonar already operates an AI-based location platform for mapping charging stations called ChargePlanner. In essence, it helps charging companies and operators plan their networks by compiling location-based data on hotspots, pricing, and market conditions for truck and car charging. This is currently used by over 200 European customers including Q8, McDonalds, Jumbo, Basic Fit and Decathlon.

Ladeplan’s solution works quite similarly, using AI to help with charging infrastructure planning across Germany and Europe based on data from more than 800 different CPOs. They have over 50 customers including the likes of Audi, Die Autobahn, Pfalzwerke and others.

RetailSonar itself states that the two companies have been “operating in parallel” for some time, and that the deal is designed to help them find ‘synergies’ between the two. While Belgium-based RetailSonar operates across Europe, Ladeplan’s expertise and network is focused in Germany.

No financial details have been provided on the acquisition, but RetailSonar has confirmed that existing Ladeplan customers will be able to continue using their solution.

Dieter Debels, CEO of RetailSonar, said in a statement: “Each year, our clients collectively open, close or optimize more than 10,000 locations using insights from our software. The strength of our platform lies in the combination of intelligently gathered market data with our expertise in building highly accurate predictive models.” He added: “It’s no coincidence that ‘ladeplan’ is almost a literal translation of ‘ChargePlanner’, we have been operating in parallel with the same passion and goals in mind. Now we can do this together.”
