Xpeng Motors announces its first overseas production project
Considering the high popularity of MPVs in Indonesia, Xpeng Motors is prioritising the localisation of the X9. Like Chery, Geely, and Hozon Auto (Neta), the company has outsourced local production to contract manufacturer Handal Indonesia Motor. The latter will assemble the electric MPV at a factory in Purwakarta, a town in the West Java province, starting in July. The Chinese automaker has yet to disclose any plans for localising the G6.
Xpeng Motors is not planning full-fledged manufacturing in Indonesia at this point. Handal Indonesia Motor will assemble the X9 at its local facility from imported completely built knocked-down (CKD) kits. Until the company is ready with the locally assembled units, Xpeng Motors is importing the X9 as a completely built-up unit (CBU), just like the G6. The Chinese automaker handed over keys to its first 100 customers of these EVs in Indonesia at the launch event yesterday.
“As Southeast Asia’s largest automotive market, Indonesia is a perfect home for Xpeng, said James Wu,” the company’s Vice President. Xpeng Motors does not plan to set up its own manufacturing facility, though.
Xpeng Motors offers the X9 in Indonesia in Standard Range Pro, Long Range Pro, and Long Range Pro+ configurations, priced at 990 million rupiah (approx. 52,500 euros), 1,059 million rupiah (approx. 56,000 euros), and 1,099 million rupiah (approx. 58,250 euros), respectively. The electric MPV accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 7.7 seconds and delivers a CLTC range of up to 702 km.
Customers purchasing the G6 do not enjoy a wide selection, as Xpeng Motors offers it in only a Standard Range configuration, priced at 599 million rupiah (approx. 31,750 euros). The electric SUV hits 0 to 100 kph in 6.2 seconds and travels up to 550 km on a full charge, but as per the more stringent WLTP method.
