First motorway charging park from Fastned in the German network in operation

Fastned has opened its first fast-charging location directly on a motorway as part of the German network. At the Neufelder Heide-Süd service area on the A40 motorway, three covered fast-charging stations with a capacity of up to 400 kW each are now available.

In February 2024, four operators were awarded the contract to build almost 1,000 fast-charging points at 200 unmanaged motorway service areas as part of the German network. The contracts were awarded to E.ON, the bidding consortium Autostrom Nord (Autostrom plus), TotalEnergies and Fastned. The Dutch company was able to secure one of six lots comprising 34 sites.

The first fast-charging site from the motorway lot has now been connected to the grid at the Neufelder Heide-Süd service area. Three HYC400 hyperchargers from Alpitronic with a total of six charging points are available at the new Fastned site on the A40 motorway between Duisburg and the Dutch border in North Rhine-Westphalia. Each charging point offers a charging capacity of at least 200 kW, with a maximum of up to 400 kW possible. It is noticeable that Fastned has deviated from its usual design for the roof at this location. Nevertheless, the foiling of the charging points is intended to be reminiscent of the design of the Fastned roofs.

“With the new charging park at the Neufelder Heide service area, we are bringing Fastned fast-charging stations to the German motorways for the first time – we are very proud of this. At the same time, we are looking forward to realising Fastned fast-charging stations at 33 other locations as part of the German network in the coming months,” says Linda Boll, Country Director of Fastned Germany. There is no information on when further motorway locations will be connected to the network. There are currently at least other HPC charging parks under construction at the Löwenburg service area and opposite the Fuchsgrund service area on the A2 motorway, at Vareler Wald on the A29 motorway and Jalmer Moor and Jalm on the A7 motorway.

“With the opening of these charging parks, we are continuing the nationwide densification of charging points along the motorways. We are building a total of 1,000 fast-charging points at 200 locations on the motorways,” adds Michael Güntner, Chairman of the Management Board of Autobahn GmbH. However, a further 8,000 fast-charging points are to be built at around 900 locations as part of the regional lots. Fastned is to build 96 of these. Three of these are now in operation, including the first fast-charging location in the German network across all providers.
