Toyota announces new bZ4X production in Indonesia

In its press conference at the annual GAIKINDO Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) today, Toyota announced plans to locally produce the new bZ4X. The company also debuted the updated EV for the local market.

Three years after launching its first EV in Indonesia, the original bZ4X, Toyota now plans to make the model’s facelifted version its first locally produced EV in the country. The company calls the move a strategic step to support the Indonesian government’s policy for accelerating EV adoption.

Toyota has yet to disclose the extent of localisation in the production process or the level of local component sourcing. However, the company will likely take into the local tax structure, under which the government charges a VAT of just 1 per cent instead of the standard rate of 11 per cent on EVs with at least 40 per cent local content.

Following local production, Toyota expects to make the bZ4X more easily reachable—possibly due to a lower price—and to optimise spare parts availability, thereby speeding up service and repairs. “This initiative not only reflects Toyota’s commitment to providing inclusive mobility solutions, but also contributes to job creation, increased national technology independence, and building a greener future for Indonesia,” said Hiroyuki Ueda, the President Director of PT. Toyota Astra Motor (TAM), the Japanese automaker’s 50:50 local joint venture with PT. Astra International Tbk.

According to a report from Antara News, Toyota will launch the locally produced bZ4X in Indonesia at the end of 2025 and offer it only with a front-wheel drive layout. In Europe, the company gives customers a choice of two configurations in the bZ4X FWD, one with a 57.7 kWh battery pack and a 123 kW motor and one with a 73.1 kWh battery pack and a 165 kW motor. The base FWD configuration accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in 8.6 seconds, achieves a top speed of 140 kph, and delivers a range of 444 km. The top FWD configuration hits 0 to 100 kph in 7.4 seconds, clocks a higher maximum speed of 160 kph, and travels further up to 568 km on a full charge.

Along with the new bZ4X, Toyota is showcasing the Urban Cruiser EV at GIIAS 2025. The company could launch the all-electric small SUV a few months after Suzuki drives the e Vitara into showrooms in early 2026.
