Xpeng starts local assembly of X9 electric MPV in Indonesia

Chinese EV maker Xpeng has begun local production in Indonesia, assembling the X9 MPV via CKD kits. The move is part of its global localisation strategy, aiming for sales and service coverage in 70% of Indonesia’s core cities by year-end.

The Chinese company also handed over the first locally produced unit at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show 2025. Xpeng uses the Completely Knocked Down (CKD) approach, importing disassembled kits for local assembly to meet regulatory requirements and improve supply chain efficiency.

Indonesia remains Southeast Asia’s largest EV market with high demand for smart electric vehicles. Xpeng plans to extend its sales and service network to 70% of Indonesia’s core urban centres and 85% of high-density areas by the end of 2025, prioritising Jakarta, Bali, and Java for new experience centres.

The X9 MPV launched in China in January 2024, with the 2025 model arriving in April. Xpeng opened pre-orders for the G6 and X9 in Indonesia on 16 March, followed by the right-hand drive X9 launch in June at a starting price of 9.9 billion Indonesian rupiah (approx. 51,700 euros).

Xpeng is not the only carmaker looking to manufacture EVs locally in Indonesia. Toyota just debuted an updated version of the bZ4X for the local market, saying that it plans to locally produce the EV there. However, Toyota has yet to disclose the extent of localisation in the production process or the level of local component sourcing.

But back to Xpeng: the company officially entered the Indonesian market earlier this year, introducing the G6 and X9 there, as they are the only EVs it developed for both left- and right-hand drive markets. Moreover, MPVs dominate Indonesia’s auto market, with people movers accounting for five of the country’s ten best-selling cars in 2024.

Xpeng intends to expand its international presence to over 60 countries and regions this year and targets 50% of sales from overseas markets within the next decade. The company currently operates in 46 countries and regions, with cumulative global deliveries exceeding 800,000 units. The Chinese automaker entered Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia last year.

Verygood, but 800 X9 produced locally will not be sufficient, Toyota will have to build a factory for its bad Bz4X, as factories will be used to produce Xpeng vehicles.. .
