Rivian begins NACS rollout across its US charging network

Rivian has started upgrading its US-based Adventure Network with NACS connectors, beginning with select Outpost sites. The move signals a wider shift away from CCS, with dual-connector infrastructure planned across key regions through 2025.

Rivian has initiated the rollout of native North American Charging Standard (NACS) support across its proprietary Adventure Network in the United States, marking a significant shift in the country’s fast-charging landscape. The transition began at the Joshua Tree Outpost in California, where four CCS chargers were recently converted to NACS. Additional locations, including the Hamptons and Yosemite Outposts, are scheduled for upgrade in the coming months, making them the first Rivian-owned sites to fully support NACS vehicles.

Throughout the remainder of 2025, Rivian plans to retrofit existing Adventure Network sites across key US markets by adding NACS connectors alongside existing CCS infrastructure. This dual-standard approach is designed to ensure interoperability during the industry-wide transition, as multiple OEMs adopt NACS as their preferred fast-charging interface.

The upgrades are integrated with Rivian’s digital ecosystem, allowing drivers to monitor charger availability in real time via the Rivian app or through the in-vehicle infotainment system. This latest development underscores Rivian’s commitment to ensuring broad accessibility and compatibility within its US charging infrastructure as the electric vehicle market consolidates around the NACS format.

By year-end, Rivian expects a substantial portion of its American network to be NACS-enabled, supporting not only Rivian drivers but also other EV users equipped with the standard.Tesla released the design of its proprietary Supercharger plug in North America in November 2022 and invited car manufacturers and charging network operators to use Supercharger plugs and sockets in the future to make its system the charging standard in North America.

In 2023, a number of carmakers in North America, including Ford, General Motors, and Rivian, said they would adopt the system this year. A number of carmakers now offer adapters, allowing their drivers to plug into the Supercharging network – and thus also use Rivian’s NACS chargers. Many will offer their EVs with the NACS inlet in the future, making CCS less relevant in the US and Canada.

Rivian’s announcement does not come as a surprise. When the carmaker said last year that it had enabled its drivers to use Tesla’s Supercharger network, it also announced that it would  open its own ‘Rivian Adventure Network‘ to third-party brands later in 2024. The company currently operates 424 charging stations at 70 locations in 22 US states – prioritised at locations “where Rivian drivers are most often on the road”. Large flagship locations are located near the US national parks Yosemite and Yellowstone.
