Indiana awards funding for 36 new EV charging projects
It will see Indiana add 18 DC fast charging stations and 18 Level 2 charging locations, as part of a statewide effort to expand access to EV infrastructure. The new DC charging hubs will be installed along Indiana’s ‘Alternative Fuel Corridors’, and will be placed near travel hubs such as shopping centres, restaurants, and service stations. All fast-charging locations are set to offer 24/7 access.
Meanwhile, the 18 Level 2 charging hubs are designed to benefit drivers in areas where they are likely to stop over for longer. They will therefore be installed in both urban and rural areas with longer ‘dwell times’. GOEVIN has stated that the sites used will combine both public and private property in a bid to increase visibility and usage.
The award recipients include both public and private companies, including Tesla, Red E Charging, Butler University, and city authorities in South Bend, Evansville and Rensselaer. More than 95 project proposals were submitted for the tender process prior to the June 30th deadline. Ryan Lisek, program director of Drive Clean Indiana, said the grants build upon currently deployed charging infrastructure. “Indiana has invested over $13 billion to support the development of electric vehicles and battery manufacturing facilities.”
The funding announcement follows a June outreach tour by GOEVIN to eight cities across the state. These ‘Pit Stops’ included Evansville, Clarksville, Indianapolis, Muncie, South Bend, Fort Wayne, Lafayette, and Hammond. These events saw the team provide information about GOEVIN electric fleet & charging infrastructure in the state as well as new opportunities for improving public charging infrastructure.
GOEVIN states that all projects are expected to begin construction this Autumn and will be complete by the end of 2026.
