New EV fast charging hub opens in Leicester, UK
The charging hub is located on the site of a disused car wash on Uppingham Road, a busy street on the edge of the city. It has a total of 10 charging bays all of which can provide charging speeds up to 300kW. The company says it is part of a move to expand EV charging in “underserved areas across the UK”. This is reflected in the pricing; 65p per kWh , which Zest calls “one of the most cost-effective ultra-rapid charging options” in the area. (The average price of ultra-fast charging in the UK is about 76p/kWh, according to Zapmap)
Robin Heap, CEO of Zest, said: “To meet the growing demand for electric vehicles, we need to build abundant infrastructure where people actually need it, close to where they live and work. This new urban hub in Leicester is a long-term solution, making charging more accessible today and future-proofing the city for years to come… Infrastructure like this helps make that shift more practical, for more people, more quickly.”
Like other Zest charging hubs, users are able to pay via a range of apps – including Zest’s own dedicated app or the Octopus Electroverse and Plugsurfing apps. There’s also an option for commercial EV drivers, who can use the Allstar app.
Cllr Sanjay Modhwadia, Leicester City Council, said: “The introduction of new EV chargers on Uppingham Road is a welcome and timely development for our community. By making it easier for people to choose electric vehicles, we’re taking meaningful steps toward a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. I’m proud to support this initiative and look forward to seeing its positive impact on residents and local businesses.”
Zest is notable for targeting regional UK cities with new charging infrastructure, including Birmingham, Bolton, Portsmouth, and more.
