Arizona seeking bids for 34 EV charging hubs
The initial phase of this charging network saw the Arizona Department of Transportation (DoT) approve 18 charging hub locations across the Interstate 10, I-8, I-40, I-17 and I-19 highways. The DoT states it has since identified 31 new locations eligible for fast-charging hubs, as well as three previously identified locations from the earlier planning phase.
Each of the new charging hubs will be privately owned or operated, with 80 per cent of project costs being covered by federal funding and the remaining 20 per cent being paid by the operator. These funds come from the $76.5m of federal funding that Arizona has received through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure scheme, which aims to build up to 74 charging hubs in the state.
The DoT is now accepting proposals from private entities to bid for the 34 charging hubs, with a deadline of January 16, 2026. It has set a few criteria for proposals, namely that the hubs must be placed less than 50 miles apart and within one mile of a highway, and that each site features at least four 150kW DC fast chargers.
The charging stations must also feature both NACS and CCS plugs. Construction is set to begin in 2027 and should take one year. (For reference, charging stations which were approved in 2024 are expected to begin construction by the end of 2025).
Arizona is one of 14 states to receive funding from the National EV Infrastructure (NEVI) programme. This national initiative allocated $5 billion towards public EV chargers along specially selected ‘alternative fuel corridors’.
