44 new chargers for Palermo’s electric bus fleet

The city of Palermo in Sicily is currently expanding its electric bus charging infrastructure, with the installation of 44 new chargers. These are expected to become operational by the end of the month.

City authorities in Palermo say that the new chargers will pave the way for a greatly expanded electric bus fleet, and are built to provide simultaneous charging for up to 60 electric buses. With two chargers already in place, it’s not clear exactly how the chargers are divided: AMAT Palermo, the city’s public transport company, refers to ‘charging stations’ but does not state whether these are single- or dual-port, AC or DC, or a mixture of both. Given that there is now a total of 46 chargers, at least some of them must be dual-port in order to accommodate charging by 60 vehicles – but this has not been confirmed.

What is clear, however, is AMAT’s commitment to electric fleet renewal. In February 2026, AMAT is set to introduce a further 65 electric buses to the streets of Palermo, and plans to hire an additional 80 new drivers. The vehicles themselves are funded through Italy’s Next Generation EU scheme, with the buses procured through centralised government tenders.

AMAT President Giuseppe Mistretta said: “The arrival of the new control units and the imminent entry into service of 60 electric buses represent a turning point for AMAT and for mobility in Palermo. This is a strategic investment that will improve the efficiency of public transport, reduce polluting emissions, and make the company more competitive. The expansion of the workforce with 80 new drivers is another fundamental step towards ensuring a punctual and comprehensive service.”
