Geely EX2: The global version of the Xingyuan city car launches in Brazil

Geely will introduce its EX2 electric city car – the global version of the Chinese bestseller Xingyuan – in markets across five continents over the next 12 months. The model, a rival to the BYD Dolphin Mini, will be produced by Geely’s cooperation partner Renault.

About a year after its launch in China, Geely’s core brand is now rolling out the compact EV to international markets, beginning with Brazil. Chinese cars already enjoy high acceptance in the South American country, where BYD has achieved particular success. Since the summer, the BYD Dolphin Mini – sold locally as the Dolphin Surf – has also been built there.

The Geely EX2 is a direct competitor to BYD’s small EV and is expected to challenge it in Latin America’s largest car market. Production will take place locally through Renault do Brasil at its Ayrton Senna plant.

As part of its partnership with Renault, Geely has acquired a 26.4 per cent stake in the French manufacturer’s Brazilian division. The agreement gives Geely both access to local production capacity and to Renault’s established dealer network in Brazil.

The EX2 made its world premiere in September 2024 at Automechanika Frankfurt and was launched a few weeks later in China under the name Geely Xingyuan.

The model quickly became a success. Between January and September 2025, it was the best-selling car in China and reached 400,000 units sold faster than any other vehicle in the country. In August 2025, it was the world’s second best-selling electric car.

At 4.14 metres long, the EX2 is 15 centimetres longer than the BYD Dolphin Mini. It measures 1.81 metres in width and 1.58 metres in height, with a wheelbase of 2.65 metres. Geely highlights the car’s safety credentials, stating that the battery features a high-strength structure and real-time temperature monitoring. Crash safety has been improved with an additional subframe at the rear and an optimised crumple zone.

Geely has not yet released full technical details for the international version. The Chinese-market Xingyuan was updated for the 2026 model year in October, and the EX2 will benefit from these improvements. The car uses an LFP battery supplied by CATL, with a capacity of either 30.1 or 40.2 kWh, depending on the version.

According to the Chinese CLTC standard, the maximum driving range is between 310 and 410 kilometres. Customers can choose between two rear-mounted electric motors: an entry-level version with 58 kW (79 PS) and an upgraded option producing 85 kW (116 PS). Geely lists the charging rate at 1.66 C, giving the larger battery a peak charging power of around 67 kW. The battery can be charged from 30 to 80 per cent in approximately 21 minutes.

With a starting price of 68,800 yuan – around €8,400 – the Geely Xingyuan ranks among the most affordable cars in China. Prices in international markets, including Europe, are expected to be higher. Over the next year, Geely plans to introduce the EX2 across five continents, with a European launch already confirmed. The brand currently operates in the United Kingdom and several countries in south-eastern Europe, including Greece, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Montenegro, where it offers the EX5 SUV.
