Gridserve debuts 400kW EV chargers from ABB

Gridserve, a popular UK charging network, is introducing ABB's new A400 fast chargers for the first time. The first unit has been installed at Gridserve's charging hub at Centaurus Park in Bristol.

As well as carrying 400kW of fast charging power, the ABB A400 features two CCS charging ports with dynamic power sharing functionality. Gridserve says this enables the 400kW to be ‘modulated between both vehicles depending on their charging needs’, delivering up to 100 miles of range in under minutes depending on usage. Gridserve’s Chief Customer Officer, Rebecca Trebble, commented that it aims to ‘make EV charging easy and as dependable as filling up your car with petrol or diesel’.

On the frontend, the towers feature 32-inch touchscreen interfaces which can be used to handle everything from charging to payment. Meanwhile, on the backend, Gridserve remotely monitors the towers for faults and availability issues, deploying an in-house ‘roadside patrol team’ where necessary.

Bruno Bourguet, ABB’s Head of Europe Region and Channels, said: “Gridserve’s deployment of our latest A400 charger marks a milestone for UK drivers. The A400 has been built from the ground up to bring reliability, scalability and performance to EV charging. With its intuitive design, including an award-winning user experience and interface, it sets a new benchmark for easy-to-use and easy-to-operate charging.”

The introduction of the new ABB chargers follows a fundraising round earlier this year which saw Gridserve raise more than £100 million in equity investment to expand HPC infrastructure in the UK. The funding came from its institutional shareholders TPG, Infracapital, and Mitsubishi.
