Over 6000 EVs now part of the Openreach fleet
The 6000th electric van was delivered to the company’s exchange in Ilfracombe, Devon – in this case, a Ford E-Transit Custom, which was also its 5000th EV earlier this year and has been part of large fleet orders by Openreach for some time. It’s notable progress for an organisation which started the year with 4,300 EVs in its fleet, but now plans to upgrade the ‘vast majority’ of its diesel fleet by the end of March 2031.
Writing on LinkedIn, Openreach said: “This milestone is part of our #LetsReachZero strategy, as we work towards becoming a zero emissions business by March 2031. By upgrading the vast majority of our 23,000-strong fleet, we’re cutting emissions, improving air qualiy, and supporting the UK’s net zero goals.”
Openreach currently operates the UK’s second-largest commercial fleet, made up of 23,000 vans and cars. As it makes the shift towards adopting EVs, it has also been growing a network of EV charging points at both ‘operational sites’ and the homes of engineers for overnight charging. The network operator also has an agreement with the bus company First Bus in which Openreach engineers are able to charge their vans at First Bus depots.
