Xiaomi expands electric vehicle lineup
The three new models are reportedly the large SUV YU9, the sporty SUV YU7 GT, and the sedan SU7 L. As the model designations suggest, the SU7 L will be the long-wheelbase version of Xiaomi’s first electric vehicle, the sedan SU7. The YU7 GT is positioned as an even more powerful performance variant of Xiaomi’s second electric model, the YU7, similar to the Tesla Model Y Performance, albeit with minor design tweaks.
These reports originate from an article by Sina Tech. The YU7 GT is described as holding significance “beyond mere sales figures,” as it aims to establish Xiaomi as a brand for high-performance and dynamic electric vehicles with cutting-edge technology, building on the extreme SU7 Ultra. Prototypes of the vehicle have already been spotted during test drives on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. This is likely why Sina Tech suggests the YU7 GT will probably be the first Xiaomi model launched in Europe to compete directly with the Model Y Performance. However, no performance data has yet been disclosed in the reports; there are only indications that it may feature a powertrain with three electric motors.
While not tested on the Nordschleife, camouflaged prototypes of the SU7 L have been sighted in China. China is a key market for sedans with ample rear space, which is why many manufacturers in the internal combustion engine era offered long-wheelbase versions of their sedans specifically for the Chinese market. The standard SU7 measures exactly five metres in length and has a three-metre wheelbase. According to reports, these dimensions are expected to increase by ten to 20 centimetres, with the prototypes featuring an elongated section behind the B-pillar. This aligns with the concept of known long-wheelbase versions, where rear-seat space, luxury, and prestige are significantly enhanced.
With the design- and dynamics-focused SU7 and the slightly more practical, though still not utility-optimised, YU7, Xiaomi’s electric vehicles have earned a reputation in China as “toys for young people”. The YU9, however, is set to expand the brand’s portfolio to include premium and practical family vehicles. According to Sina Tech, the model is internally developed under the name “Kunlun” and is expected to compete with the Li Auto L9 or Aito M9, or the Onvo L90. Like these vehicles, the YU9 is likely to be offered exclusively with three rows of seats, either as a six-seater with two luxurious individual seats in the middle or as a seven-seater with a three-person rear bench. The expected length is around 5.20 metres.
It remains unclear whether the YU9 will share its platform or at least certain components with the two “7” models. However, a unique feature in its powertrain is emerging: the YU9 is expected to be Xiaomi’s first model with a range extender. Xiaomi founder Lei Jun is said to have personally participated in test drives. Technical details about the range extender remain unknown, nor is it clear whether the large SUV will be offered solely with the small internal combustion engine on board or as an optional battery-electric vehicle or extended-range electric vehicle. Clarity on this is expected soon, as the YU9 is reportedly on the verge of its official market launch. It was not included in the December edition of the Ministry of Industry’s vehicle catalogue, so its debut could happen as early as January.
