UAE gains largest charging hub in MEA Region – and ‘electrified highway’ roadmap
Firstly, the new charging hub, aka ‘The Hub’: it’s located at an ADNOC site in Saih Shuaib and is being billed as ‘the sixth largest superfast charging site in the world’. Featuring 60 charging points, ADNOC Group claims each port can charge ‘most EVs’ from 0 to 80 percent in around 20 minutes. With a footprint three times larger than the company’s conventional service stations, the charging hub is co-located with an ADNOC petrol station and gives visitors access to food and retail outlets. Billed as the largest site of its kind across the Middle East, Africa and Turkey, ADNOC Group states it is the first of several of its kind planned for the UAE.
At the opening of the new site, ADNOC Group revealed plans to install around 20 further charging hubs across the region by the end of 2027 – with the first 15 set to go live by the end of 2026. No technical specifications have yet been shared regarding these new sites, but ADNOC Group has said it hopes the network will play a key role in encouraging adoption of EVs across the UAE. Indeed, it already operates over 400 EV charging points under the E2GO brand elsewhere in the UAE, with these larger hubs poised to enable further growth towards a target of 750 by the end of 2027.
Eng. Bader Saeed Al Lamki, CEO of ADNOC Distribution, said: “Our first EV Megahub is strategically located along a vital highway that keeps our nation moving and is also the first The Hub by ADNOC location dedicated to the specific needs of inter-city commuters. As more consumers choose electric vehicles, we are redefining convenience to ensure they can travel confidently across the country, supported by our growing E2GO network.”
H.E. Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the UAE’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, added: “This hub stands out for its strategic location on the E11 highway, one of the country’s most vital corridors, providing integrated services for road users and intercity commuters. Expanding the high-speed charging network is central to our strategy to cut energy consumption in transport and drive the transformational ‘Global EV Market’ initiative, which aims to see electric vehicles represent 50% of all cars on UAE roads by 2050.”
