HYPOBATT project develops multi-MW charger for ferries
“Hyper powered vessel battery charging system” (HYPOBATT) is the title of a European pilot project that aims to advance the electrification of ferry shipping. The focus is on the necessary charging infrastructure in the ports. The goal is to develop a megawatt charging standard for ferries.
Torqeedo upgrades Cruise motor range
Torqeedo has presented an extensive upgrade to its Cruise motor range at the Metstrade marine trade fair. This consists of outboard and pod motors with 3 kW, 6 kW and 12 kW output powered by lithium-ion batteries.
Two electric ferries en route to Lake Ontario
Two electric road ferries are now on their way from Damen Shipyards Galati to Lake Ontario, Canada, two years after Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation had placed the order. The Amherst Islander II and Wolfe Islander IV, 68 and 98 metres in length, respectively, represent a new generation of zero-emission large ferries.
First ship fitted with ZES battery containers hits the water
The Dutch company Zero Emission Services (ZES) has launched the first vessel bearing its exchangeable battery containers, so-called ZES packs, onboard, effectively turning the ship into an electric boat. The Alphenaar now operates between Alphen aan den Rijn and Moerdijk on behalf of the Heineken brewery.
Vinssen presents hydrogen boat in South Korea
South Korea’s first commercialized hydrogen electric boat has been unveiled at the 2021 Busan International Boat Show. Developed by Vinssen, the Hydrogenia vessel is powered by a Danfoss Editron electric drivetrain and sub-system. Vinssen is planning to build a further 50 boats using similar hydrogen electric technology over the next year.
Torqeedo lays foundation for new HQ
Torqeedo, a company specialising in electric boat drives, has celebrated the laying of the foundation stone for its new headquarters and production facilities. Like the previous buildings, the new building is being constructed in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany.
Electric hydrofoil racing series to take off in 2023
After Formula E founder Alejandro Agag announced a new racing series with electrically powered racing boats last year, the creators of the E1 series have now presented the concept of an electric hydrofoil boat called “RaceBird”. The first races are to be held in early 2023.
Volvo Penta acquires ZEM AS for maritime batteries
Volvo Penta has acquired a majority stake in ZEM AS, a Norwegian supplier of batteries and complete electric propulsion solutions for ships and boats. In doing so, ZEM is to further expand its battery and propulsion business and successively develop and offer complete packages in collaboration with Volvo Penta.
Candela Speedboat presents water taxi
The Swedish company Candela Speedboat has presented the Candela P-12, an electric water taxi for twelve people. Pre-orders for the hydrofoil are already possible, with deliveries scheduled to begin at the end of 2022.
