Two electric ferries en route to Lake Ontario
Two electric road ferries are now on their way from Damen Shipyards Galati to Lake Ontario, Canada, two years after Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation had placed the order. The Amherst Islander II and Wolfe Islander IV, 68 and 98 metres in length, respectively, represent a new generation of zero-emission large ferries.

First ship fitted with ZES battery containers hits the water
The Dutch company Zero Emission Services (ZES) has launched the first vessel bearing its exchangeable battery containers, so-called ZES packs, onboard, effectively turning the ship into an electric boat. The Alphenaar now operates between Alphen aan den Rijn and Moerdijk on behalf of the Heineken brewery.

Bangkok gets 12 electric commuter ferries
The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) has commissioned twelve new all-electric commuter ferries. The fibreglass boats measure 14.5 metres and are powered by an integrated battery-electric system supplied by Torqeedo.

Vinssen presents hydrogen boat in South Korea
South Korea’s first commercialized hydrogen electric boat has been unveiled at the 2021 Busan International Boat Show. Developed by Vinssen, the Hydrogenia vessel is powered by a Danfoss Editron electric drivetrain and sub-system. Vinssen is planning to build a further 50 boats using similar hydrogen electric technology over the next year.

Fjord1 commissions three battery-electric ferry conversions
Norwegian ferry operator Fjord1 has commissioned Norwegian Electric Systems (NES) as a system integrator to convert three ferries from gas and diesel propulsion to battery operation. The three ferries are scheduled to start emissions-free operation in December 2022.

XALT to deliver batteries for New Zealand’s first electric ferry
XALT Energy is contributing the batteries for New Zealand’s first all-electric ferry. The 19-metre vessel with a capacity of 135 passengers will be part of the fleet of ferry operator East by West Wellington Harbour Ferry Service and will cover daily water routes in the bay off Wellington.

Fraunhofer is working on fuel cell systems for ships
The Fraunhofer Institute is working with 13 European partners to develop the world’s first ammonia-based fuel cell for ships in the ShipFC project. Ammonia is mainly known for its use as a fertiliser, but is also suitable as a high-quality energy source, the institute says.
