Volvo Penta electrifies diesel ferry
Building on the ElectriCity project in Gothenburg, the city’s existing electric bus service will be expanded to include a fully electric ferry. For this purpose, a diesel ferry is to be converted to an electric ship propulsion system from Volvo Penta.
Series-ready hybrid yacht from Sunseeker and RR
British luxury yacht manufacturer Sunseeker International and Rolls-Royce have agreed to present the first production yacht with hybrid propulsion system from Rolls-Royce subsidiary MTU next year. The new system was recently unveiled at Boot Düsseldorf.
Norway: Siemens opens battery factory for ships
Siemens has opened an “advanced robotized and digitized” battery module factory in Trondheim, where 55 battery modules will be assembled per shift for marine and offshore markets. The factory comprises a line with eight robot stations and a capacity of up to 300 MWh per year.
Baumüller to build ferry with hybrid drive
The German drive and automation specialist Baumüller has received an order from the Danish shipyard Hvide Sande for the supply of a hybrid drive system for a ferry. From autumn 2019, the ship will be sailing between the ports of Ærø and Rudkøbing.
Stockholm: Danfoss build hybrid ice breaker
Danfoss Editron is supplying the drive for Stockholm’s first ice-capable hybrid passenger ferry. As the Stockholm-based Waxholmsbolaget ferry will be in service throughout the year, it has been specially designed to operate in waters with an ice layer up to 25 cm thick.
Norway commissions high speed hydrogen ferry
Norway is funding a hydrogen-powered high speed ferry and a short-sea freighter through their PILOT-E programme. They awarded a grant to Hyon, a joint venture between Nel, Hexagon Composites and PowerCell Sweden to realise the project together with partners.
Nobiskrug and H2-Industries building LOHC yacht
Nobiskrug and H2-Industries have announced their plan to build the first fully electric motor yacht with the Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) system on board. The system stores hydrogen in liquid LOHC oil, which is similar to diesel, which is then used to power a fuel cell motor.
Rolls-Royce presents Li-ion battery for ships
Rolls-Royce is launching a lithium-ion based energy storage system for ships. This is the first time the British propulsion specialist will deliver batteries to fit their drives as such units were previously supplied by an external party. The SAVe Energy system is modular.
Q-Yachts presents electric yacht
The Finnish company Q-Yachts has presented a fully electric yacht with a minimal design. The boat, called the Q30, has enough space for up to eight passengers. The price has not been specified yet.
Hydrogen research vessel deemed feasible
A team led by Sandia National Laboratories, usually charged with nuclear security in the USA, has found a zero emission vessel running on hydrogen feasible. Their study developed a fuel-cell coastal research vessel consistent with marine regulations.
